APRN INPATIENT - NEWBORN NURSERY at UNM Hospital

Join to apply for this role. The Newborn Nursery team at UNMH is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our dynamic group on a PRN (as needed) basis. This role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment focused on delivering high‑quality care to newborns and their families. As part of the APP team, you will provide comprehensive post‑delivery evaluations and inpatient care for newborns at our main hospital campus, independently manage the newborn clinic ensuring continuity of care and timely assessments, and work 10‑hour day shifts covering 7 days a week, including holidays.

Position Summary

Function in an inpatient/urgent care area of advance practice in the role of practitioner, mentor, consultant, educator, researcher, and manager. Establish goals and priorities in accordance with patient and staff needs and organizational objectives. Ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

Detailed Responsibilities
  • Assess, diagnose, and develop treatment plans; implement treatment, follow‑up, and evaluate patient within scope of practice protocols as outlined by state statute.
  • Perform patient history and physical exams as needed for procedures or admissions; document findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
  • Complete admitting orders, daily rounds and orders, consultations with nurses, specialists and ancillary staff, discharge summary, transfers, medication management and other orders as required for patient care management.
  • Perform invasive and non‑invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic procedures and tests. Explain the necessity of preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedures to patient and patient’s family.
  • Evaluate and revise intervention care/treatment plan with patient and family as necessary to achieve improved health.
  • Provide education for patients and/or families about preventative care, medical issues and use of prescribed medical treatment.
  • Provide accurate documentation of patient care, document orders, directives, procedures and patient responses in the medical record and communicate them to other members of the health‑care team; maintain accurate, legible and confidential records.
  • Work as a team member with medical/nursing/counseling staff to provide comprehensive care and promote continuity of care.
  • Guide, teach, support and serve as a clinical resource for nursing and medical staff.
  • Act as a role model for advanced practice professions, precept nurses, other advanced practice nurses and physician assistant students.
  • Serve as a role model through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision‑making, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Support research by conducting or participating in research studies; incorporate findings in clinical practice.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in‑services, meetings, and workshops.
  • Follow patient safety–related policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes.
  • Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
  • Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner.
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don’t understand or may 'not seem right'.
