To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise – "To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan" – the Alexandria VA Health Care System is seeking a Board‑Eligible/Board‑Certified Hospitalist in Medical Service to join an established hospitalist group of seven (7) that provides 24/7 inpatient care.

Location

Alexandria VA Health Care System, Alexandria, Louisiana – a Joint Commission accredited, complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans within 23 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes. The central location is Pineville, LA, with community‑based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) in Jennings, Lafayette, Fort Polk, and Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Schedule & Shift Structure

Schedule:

7 on / 7 off 12‑hour shifts or a 40‑hour per week swing shift (approximately 1 pm–9 pm, Monday‑Friday) as needed. Occasional nocturnist coverage (1–2 times per year).

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Admissions, discharges, and ongoing care of medical inpatients (average census 8–12 patients daily).
  • Basic ICU care and bedside procedures; comfort with ICU support, although ICU care is primarily provided by a dedicated Intensivist.
  • Medical consultations of non‑medical patients.
  • Participation in quality improvement and utilization review.
  • Electronic record‑keeping.
Required Skills Citizenship

Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.)

Education

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Approved schools include:

  • Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Foreign schools accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia, as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
  • For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M‑8, part II, chapter 1.
Licensure and Registration

Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Continual registration in the State of licensure is required if that is a requirement for continuing active licensure.

Board Certification

Board certified or Board eligible in Internal Medicine or a specialty area based on the VA Health Care System needs.

Physical Standards

Applicants must meet the physical requirements of the position. Selected candidates will undergo urine drug screening prior to appointment. Refusal to be tested will result in denial of employment with the VA.

English Language Proficiency

Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient‑care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
