The Role

The Early Head Start Teacher develops and implements individual and group educational plans for infants and toddlers, designed to promote social‑emotional, physical, and cognitive growth in a manner appropriate to their stage of development. In each Early Head Start classroom, two teachers work together, supported by program aides and volunteers, to lead child development activities. You will manage day‑to‑day operations, ensure legal compliance, build family partnerships, and maintain program quality while reporting to the Center Director or Manager.

What

You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
  • Develop and implement individualized and group lesson plans and educational activities that promote all developmental areas to improve readiness for preschool.
  • Guide and facilitate daily classroom activities and field trips.
  • Select and set up equipment, ensuring a safe, developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  • Practice responsive caregiving, integrating routines into a flexible schedule.
  • Plan and conduct at least two conferences and two home visits (or more) to keep parents informed and help them develop observational skills.
  • Maintain accurate records on paper and in designated online systems.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
  • Conduct and document observations, assessments, and screenings; keep a comprehensive portfolio for each child.
  • Work with program aides and volunteers to develop their planning and classroom skills.
  • Protect child safety through active supervision, ensuring no child is left alone.
  • Use the playground as an extension of the classroom, ensuring it remains safe.
  • E eat with children during meals, teaching social and self‑help skills and sound nutritional practices.
  • Meet children’s physical needs—assisting with rest, hygiene, diapering, and toilet habits.
  • Encourage parent involvement through classroom and home activities.
  • Create an annual inventory of classroom equipment and supplies.
  • Co‑operate with the Manager of Education & Inclusion on professional development plans.
  • Keep the classroom clean and organized.
  • Mobilize and document matching‑in‑kind activities, goods, and services.
  • Remain on site until all children are safely picked up by parents or legal guardians.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field with coursework equivalent to an early childhood education major and experience teaching preschool‑age children.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with individuals and teams at all levels.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem‑solving, and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to follow established directions and take initiative.
  • Knowledge of the Head Start/Early Head Start program.
  • Sensitive and caring relationship with children.
  • Strict confidentiality regarding required information.
  • Participation in professional development, including basic first aid and pediatric CPR certification as required by state licensing and HSPPS.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual, preferably English/Spanish or other languages used by children and families.
  • In North Carolina, Birth‑Kindergarten (B‑K) licensure preferred.
Additional Qualifications
  • Physical ability to perform medium‑to‑heavy work up to 50 pounds as required by the job.
  • Clear pre‑employment background checks, including criminal, sex offender, employment, and education verifications.
