The Surgical Aide assists nursing staff and surgeons by preparing patients, equipment, and surgical environments to ensure efficient and safe patient care. Responsibilities include patient transport, equipment maintenance, and support during patient positioning and transfers under RN supervision. The role requires interpersonal skills, adherence to safety protocols, and basic healthcare knowledge with a preference for hospital experience and BLS certification.

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager and the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse, the surgery attendant performs tasks assisting and facilitating efficient patient flow and safe patient care in the unit.

• Transports patients and equipment using appropriate standard precautions.
• Cleans and makes ready beds, stretchers and wheelchairs for patient transfer.
• Presents self to other staff, patients, families and visitors in a warm, receptive manner. Provides direction and information to patients and family members. Identifies and obtains language translation as needed.
• Assists with surgical patient positioning, transfer, cast application and removal under the direction of the RN.
• Retrieves and delivers items to other departments. Responds promptly to assignments and requests.
• Assists nursing staff in maintaining high standards of nursing practice by facilitating a prompt response to patient needs.
• Restocks supplies, cleans/defrosts refrigerators, cleans equipment and maintains orderly environment.
• Assures patient transfer and transport equipment is functioning properly.
• Functions as a surgical team member.
• Demonstrates competence to perform assigned responsibilities is a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of the members served by the department.
• Appropriately adapts assigned assessment, treatment, and/or service methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific and other developmental needs of each member served.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

Experience

• 1 year of experience in a hospital setting preferred

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

• BLS required
