Gastrointestinal Oncologist

Position Title: Gastrointestinal (GI) Oncologist
Department: Oncology / Hematology-Oncology
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Alexandria, Virginia
Reports To: Chief of Oncology / Department Chair

Position Summary

The Gastrointestinal Oncologist will provide expert clinical care to patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, including esophageal, gastric, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, and other GI malignancies. The successful candidate will deliver compassionate, evidence-based care while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop individualized treatment plans. This role also offers opportunities for participation in clinical research, teaching, and program development within a leading cancer program.

Key

Responsibilities
Clinical Care
  • Diagnose, stage, and manage a full spectrum of gastrointestinal cancers.

  • Develop and implement personalized treatment plans, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and coordination with surgical and radiation oncology teams.

  • Provide longitudinal follow-up and survivorship care for patients.

  • Interpret diagnostic studies including endoscopic findings, imaging results, biopsy pathology, and molecular/genomic reports.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary tumor boards and collaborate closely with surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, gastroenterologists, and palliative care specialists.

Teaching & Mentorship
  • Educate and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and other trainees.

  • Deliver lectures and participate in academic conferences and educational programs.

Program Development & Leadership
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the growth of the GI oncology program.

  • Participate in departmental committees and strategic planning.

  • Foster a patient-centered culture focused on safety, quality, and innovation.

Qualifications Required
  • MD or DO degree.

  • Board certification or board eligibility in Medical Oncology (and/or Hematology).

  • Fellowship training in Medical Oncology with a focus on gastrointestinal cancers or substantial clinical experience in GI oncology.

  • Current state medical license or eligibility for licensure.

  • Excellent communication, clinical judgment, and team collaboration skills.

Preferred
  • Additional fellowship or research background in GI oncology.

  • Experience in clinical trial participation or leadership.

  • Academic appointment qualifications at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level (if academic role).

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Working Conditions
  • Outpatient clinic, inpatient consultations, and infusion center involvement.

  • Collaboration within a multidisciplinary cancer center environment.

  • Participation in call schedule as required by the department.
