Overview

For nearly 85 years, we’ve designed, built and maintained amphibious ships, destroyers, and cutters for the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard. The largest supplier of U.S. Navy surface combatants, we’re simultaneously building four classes of ships and have pioneered the development and production of technologically advanced, highly capable ships for the surface Navy fleet for decades.

The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position is for the Alexandria Engineering Office within the E35 Department (Submarine Engineering - Advanced Capabilities). Should be able to collaborate and perform within a cross‑functional team. This position will regularly work and communicate with other Engineers/Designers across Departments via email, phone, and in person meetings.

The SSN(X) Platform Mechanical Team

The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems across the non‑propulsion areas of the submarine, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and many others. You will team with the Navy and industry to develop these systems, molding what will become the world’s most advanced and capable submarine.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for key mechanical systems on the submarine
  • Develop and mature innovative new design concepts considering functional requirements, future technologies, operational needs, construction and lessons from legacy systems
  • Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products
  • Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups
  • Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
Must Have
  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience
  • Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
Nice to Have
  • A technical background with a knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from the concept stage through production and installation
  • Be innovative, helping to develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the presentation of technical reports and briefs to the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners
  • An understanding of how mechanical systems interface with structures, electrical, and other mechanical systems
  • An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, mechanical joints, and others
  • Experience in traditional and computer‑based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
  • The ability to work in and help foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
