The Public Interest Legal Foundation, the nation’s most active public interest law firms focused on election law, voter fraud, and election integrity, seeks a Director of Communications to lead media outreach and strengthen the organization’s communications strategy. This role focuses on generating earned media, reporter engagement, and developing creative ways to share accurate information about our work. Light social media content development is included to ensure media coverage is shared across our social media channels.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about communications and writing, American first principles, and following the news. The role is based in our office near the King Street Metro in historic Old Town Alexandria, VA. We offer a positive, collaborative workplace with room for creativity.
Key ResponsibilitiesMedia Outreach and Strategy
- Develop and implement a comprehensive media outreach strategy to elevate PILF’s work.
- Pitch reporters, secure media placements (especially in print and radio), and identify timely opportunities in the news cycle.
- Draft press releases, statements, advisories —often based on legal filings and court documents.
- Collaborate with development team, attorneys, and staff to craft accurate talking points aligned with our mission and promote our work to key audiences.
- Build and maintain targeted media lists.
Social Media and Content
- Create weekly posts highlighting PILF’s legal work and media coverage (primarily Facebook and Twitter).
- Use Canva for basic formatting and graphics (no design background required).
- Ensure all content reflects PILF’s brand and messaging.
- Maintain an organized archive of media assets.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in communications, with a strong background in media outreach and securing earned media.
- Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in public policy, government, regulatory, or legal communications.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate cross-functionally with colleagues.
- Appreciation for American constitutional principles and the organization’s mission.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word);
Canva and Mail Chimp (or other email marketing software). - Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, basic video recording in an in-office studio—no advanced production or editing skills required—editing is outsourced.
- Comfort reviewing small-medium paid digital and radio ad-buys when needed.
This is a full-time, permanent position. PILF offers competitive compensation, medical and dental benefits, and a collaborative, positive work environment.
The projected salary range is $65,000–$135,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
This role is based in our Old Town, Alexandria office, a short walk from the King Street Metro, Amtrak, and VRE stations.
Partial remote arrangements may be considered for exceptional candidates who meet all requirements.
