Job SummaryThe main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training and making workflow recommendations.
Key Responsibilities- Phlebotomy on all types of patients—hard sticks and needles, urine, thyroid testing.
- Perform blood draws and timed glucose tolerance testing.
- Process specimens (including paps, cultures, urine specimens and those collected by office staff) in the computer system.
- Package specimens for courier pick‑up and maintain inventory of stock.
- High customer service is a must.
- Data entry and processing.
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc. Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required. Demonstrates technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully understands all physician orders and matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test order.
- Checks all test requisitions or computer label against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Packages specimens for transport, stores samples according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate containers or tubes, accurately labels, and follows specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
- Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attends annual department trainings and answers telephone calls, reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months’ work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 1 year of experience.
