Engineering Assistant I/II - Alice Area Office

The Texas Department of Transportation invites applications for the Engineering Assistant I and II positions in the Alice Area Office. These roles provide opportunities for engineering interns and professionals to gain experience in project management, construction inspection, and transportation engineering while pursuing professional licensing.

Essential Duties

Engineering Assistant I

  • Actively prepare for professional engineering licensing through training, exams, and documentation maintenance.
  • Apply engineering principles to transportation‑related activities.
  • Assist during emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Assist with contract administration for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Participate in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (job rotation, training, education).
  • Perform construction inspection and material sampling/testing.
  • Conduct research and problem‑solving on engineering‑related issues.
  • Perform traffic barricade inspections and assist with resolution of traffic control plans.
  • Carry out other assigned responsibilities.

Engineering Assistant II

  • Perform engineering‑related calculations and drafting/design work.
  • Prepare and check plans, specifications, estimates (PS&E), and designs.
  • Review engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable laws.
  • Continue all duties of Engineering Assistant I.
  • Carrying out other assigned responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science.
  • Substitutions:
    Master’s or Doctoral degree in engineering (or equivalent) may replace the Bachelor’s requirement.

Experience

  • Engineering Assistant I:
    No prior work experience required.
  • Engineering Assistant II:
    Minimum of 1 year of engineering‑related experience.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license (state vehicle required).
  • Safety Impact Certificate issued upon hire.
  • Engineering Assistant II:
    Texas Engineer In Training Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
Competencies

Engineering Assistant I

  • Transportation engineering terminology and fundamentals.
  • Engineering designs and PS&E preparation.
  • Plan review methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Inspection methods and environmental protection practices.

Engineering Assistant II

  • Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
  • Performing calculations, including material, labor estimates, and engineering analyses.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Indoor and outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Hazards such as moving vehicles, high places, heat, or chemicals.
  • Medium physical demands: lift up to 50 lbs, carry up to 25 lbs, walk long distances.
  • Balance, walk, stand, crouch on varied surfaces.
  • Communicate verbally; exhibit visual acuity for vehicle operation and quality control.
Conditions of Employment
  • Position is physically demanding; pre‑employment physical required.
  • Must pass a drug test; subject to random testing.
  • Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program mandatory; non‑compliance may result in reclassification.
  • Required to work weekends, holidays, hours outside 8‑5, and inclement weather conditions.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment and comply with safety requirements.
  • Must respond to emergency notifications within 45 minutes on a 24‑hour basis.
Position Information

As an Engineering Assistant, you will oversee multiple projects throughout the Alice Area Office, ensuring that contractors adhere to plans and specifications. Opportunities for growth include project management, licensing advancement, and broader engineering roles.

Salary Ranges

  • Engineering Assistant I (B20): $51,158.00 – $81,351.00
  • Engineering Assistant II (B21): $54,278.00 – $87,046.00
