Job Description

Title: Special Education Paraprofessional – Level 2 Reports to: Building Principal

Job Summary

The Special Education Paraprofessional – Level 2 provides direct support to students with disabilities, enabling access to curriculum and promoting independence in their educational environment. Under the supervision of a certified special education teacher, this position supports the implementation of individualized programs, personal care, behavioral interventions, and daily instructional routines across various settings.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesInstructional and Program Support – 85%
  • Assist students with physical and self-care needs such as hygiene, toileting, feeding, dressing, occupational therapy tasks, and mobility transfers.
  • Support students during transitions between classrooms, activities, and environments (e.g., lunch, recess, specials).
  • Facilitate student participation in the general education classroom by reinforcing academic content and accommodations under teacher supervision.
  • Support the implementation of Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and accommodations.
  • Implement and monitor behavior intervention plans; provide behavior support including physical management or restraints when required (training provided).
  • Reinforce instructional content introduced by special education and general education teachers.
  • Ensure student safety and maintain a secure learning environment for all students.
  • Encourage and support student independence to the greatest extent possible.
  • Build and maintain positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with students.
  • Assist with field trips, community-based instruction, and extracurricular activities, including wheelchair securement and student mobility.
  • Collect and document student performance data as directed by the supervising teacher.
  • Support classroom behavior management and contribute to a structured and engaging learning environment.
Student Supervision – 10%
  • Supervise students in various non-instructional settings (e.g., playground, cafeteria, hallways, locker rooms, study halls).
  • Address or report inappropriate behaviors in accordance with district policies and communicate concerns to teachers or administrators as needed.

Communication – 3%

  • Maintain open and regular communication with the supervising teacher(s) regarding schedules, student needs, and daily updates. Participate in collaborative problem-solving and team meetings as requested.
Preparatory Tasks and Professional Development – 2%
  • Assist with preparation and organization of classroom materials and activities.
  • Attend and actively participate in professional development, staff meetings, workshops, and in-services as required.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times. Flexibility and adaptability in responding to student and classroom needs.
  • Physical ability to support student mobility, including lifting or transferring as needed. Willingness to complete necessary training (e.g., behavior intervention, CPI, first aid/CPR).
