Summary

The essential functions of this position include performing computed tomography on patients utilizing highly technical equipment and administering contrast materials as required. This role accurately applies ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis, performing a variety of technical procedures to achieve the highest quality diagnostic radiographs while limiting radiation exposure. The position accommodates all age groups and known diseases.

Responsibilities

• (30%) Obtains quality diagnostic radiographs utilizing x‑ray equipment and accessories. Adjusts technical factors to provide appropriate exposure based on independent judgment, human anatomy knowledge, disease effect, principles of radiation, and operation of all radiologic equipment within the department.
• (30%) Transports patient into exam room; assists patient and positions appropriately for exam; determines allergy status; injects appropriate IV contrast; performs scan with attention to positioning; remains alert for need of additional or thinner slices/images.
• (20%) Maintains safe, sanitary conditions for patients. Cleans exam room between patients. Provides appropriate radiation protection for patient and staff during exposures per safety standards.
• (20%) Draws up IV contrast if needed; administers oral contrast when indicated; performs warm‑up procedure on equipment; enters patient data and appropriate scan parameters; reviews data to assure proper exam; reviews previous exams.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs special procedures such as arteriogram, venogram, etc.
• Utilizes appropriate protective lead garments when required.
• Provides excellent patient‑care procedures in accordance with My Michigan Health mission and values.
• Provides age‑specific care for the following groups:
  Neonate/Infant (Birth‑1 year), Toddler (1‑4 years), Child (5‑12 years), Adolescent (13‑17 years), Adult (18‑64 years), Later Adult (65+ years).
• Observes radiation safety practices.
• Works collaboratively with health team members; demonstrates a positive, courteous attitude.
• Maintains professional acumen through active association with professional organizations and continuing education.
• Strives to exceed customer expectations and promotes patient satisfaction.
• Assures proper marking of patient orientation and image entry order.
• Ensures all clinical information is complete and records are correctly ordered.
• Recognizes and reports malfunction of radiographic equipment.
• Demonstrates competency in infection prevention and control practices.
• Other duties as assigned.

Certifications, Education, and Experience

• ARRT Certified CT Technologist (ARRT CT) – required, with no more than 3 years of experience since hire or transfer.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) – required within 1 month of hire/transfer.
• ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist – required within 1 year of hire/transfer.
• Associate’s Degree in Radiography (or equivalent) – required.
• Degree in a Healthcare‑Related Field with graduation from an accredited radiology program or completion within one year of hire – required.

Experience, Training and Skills

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with individuals and groups at all levels.
• Annual tuberculosis (TB) testing.
• Annual OSHA training per Exposure Control Plan.

Physical and Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions

Exposure to stressful situations including public contact, trauma, grief and death. Able to wear personal protective equipment, including latex materials or appropriate substitutes. Capable of moving freely about the facility with or without an assistive device and able to perform all job functions. Requires overall vision and hearing. Frequently required to sit, stand or walk for long periods and to flex, kneel or crouch.

May be exposed to blood borne pathogens; must follow blood borne pathogen and TB testing requirements. Able to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance and stay alert. Overall dexterity is required. Physical demand level:
Light. Must occasionally (0‑33% of the workday) lift or carry 11‑20 lbs, frequently (34‑66% of the workday) 10 lbs, and walk/stand/push/pull arm/leg controls.
