Summary

The essential functions of this position include performing computed tomography on patients utilizing highly technical equipment and administering contrast materials as required. This position accurately applies ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis, including skills required in performing a variety of technical procedures, resulting in the highest quality diagnostic radiograph, with the least amount of radiation exposure to the patient. This position takes into consideration all specific age groups as well as known disease.

Responsibilities
  • (30%) Obtains quality diagnostic radiographs utilizing x‑ray equipment and accessories. Adjusts technical factors to provide appropriate exposure by use of independent judgment, knowledge of human anatomy, effect of disease on the radiograph and the principles of radiation as well as the specific operation of all radiologic equipment within the department.
  • (30%) Transports patient into exam room; assists patient & positions appropriately for exam; determines if allergic to anything; injects appropriate IV contrast; performs scan with attention to appropriate positioning; is alert for need of additional or thinner slices/images.
  • (20%) Maintains safe, sanitary conditions for patients. Cleans exam room between patients. Provides appropriate radiation protection for patient and staff during radiation exposures according to prescribed safety standards.
  • (20%) Draws up IV contrast if needed; administers oral contrast if indicated; performs warm‑up procedure on equipment; enters patient data and appropriate scan parameters; reviews patient data to assure proper exam; reviews previous exams.
  • Performs special procedures, such as arteriogram, venogram, etc.
  • Utilizes appropriate protective lead garments when appropriate.
  • Performs excellent patient care procedures and techniques to comply with My Michigan Health mission and values.
  • Provides for the age‑specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback for the following age groups:
    • Neonate/Infant – Birth to 1 year
    • Toddler – 1 to 4 years
    • Child – 5 to 12 years
    • Adolescent – 13 to 17 years
    • Adult – 18 to 64 years
    • Later Adult – 65 years and older
  • Is responsible for the observance of radiation safety practices.
  • Works collaboratively with other health team members and enhances working relationships. Demonstrates a positive, courteous, and helpful attitude to others.
  • Maintains professional acumen through active association with professional organizations. Shows evidence of continuing education in radiography as necessary to remain current with profession. Attends in‑service educational programs and departmental meetings.
  • Consistently strives to exceed the customer’s expectations and promotes patient satisfaction.
  • Assures proper marking with regard to orientation of patient; enters images with keypad with attention to order of image.
  • Assures that all clinical information is complete; assures that film record is in correct order; provides additional information as required.
  • Ability to recognize and report malfunction of radiographic equipment appropriately.
  • Demonstrates competency in Infection Prevention and Control Practices and Policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Certifications and Licensure
  • ARRT CT:
    Required within 3 years of hire or transfer.
  • BLS:
    Basic Life Support, required within 1 month of hire or transfer.
  • ARRT:
    Registered Radiologic Technologist, required within 1 year of hire or transfer.
Education

Associate’s Degree required. Degree in a healthcare related field or graduation from an accredited radiology program within one year of hire date is required.

Experience, Training and Skills
  • Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Mandatory tuberculosis (TB) testing must be done annually.
  • Mandatory Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training must also be completed annually according to the Exposure Control Plan.
