Geotechnical Site Engineer

Role Overview

Geotechnical Site Engineer to support the delivery of the Carnaig to Fanellan Ground Investigation Project. The successful candidate will supervise and record ground investigation works on site, ensuring that works are carried out safely, accurately, and in accordance with project specifications, relevant standards, and client requirements. The role involves working closely with drilling crews, subcontractors, laboratories, engineers, and the project management team to ensure high‑quality site data is collected and reported efficiently.

• Supervise ground investigation activities, including boreholes, trial pits, sampling, in‑situ testing, and associated site works.
• Log soil and rock samples in accordance with relevant standards and project requirements.
• Record site information accurately, including daily progress, ground conditions, sample depths, groundwater observations, testing records, and any site issues.
• Ensure works are carried out in line with the project specification, method statements, risk assessments, and health and safety procedures.
• Liaise with drilling crews, machine operators, subcontractors, and the wider project team.
• Coordinate samples for laboratory testing and ensure correct labelling, storage, and chain of custody.
• Monitor site progress and report delays, technical issues, or changes in ground conditions to the Project Manager or Senior Engineer.
• Assist with preparation of daily site records, field logs, photographic records, and progress reports.
• Support the delivery of factual ground investigation information for reporting.
• Ensure environmental controls and site housekeeping standards are maintained.
• Promote a positive safety culture and stop works where unsafe practices are identified.

• A degree or relevant qualification in Geology, Engineering Geology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline.
• Previous experience working on ground investigation or geotechnical site investigation projects.
• Experience supervising boreholes, trial pits, sampling, and in‑situ testing.
• Competence in soil and rock logging.
• Knowledge of UK ground investigation standards and good site practice.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently on site and as part of a wider project team.
• Full UK driving licence.

• Experience working on infrastructure, transmission, utilities, energy, highways, or remote access projects.
• Familiarity with BS 5930, Eurocode 7, BS EN ISO 14688, BS EN ISO 14689, and BS 1377.
• CSCS card or equivalent site safety certification.
• First Aid qualification.
• SSSTS or similar supervisory qualification.
• Experience working in rural, upland, or challenging terrain environments.
• Knowledge of peat, soft ground, rockhead profiling, groundwater monitoring, or environmental sampling.

• Comply with all project health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
• Review and follow approved RAMS before commencing works.
• Attend site inductions, toolbox talks, and daily briefings.
• Report hazards, near misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions immediately.
• Ensure works do not proceed where there is a risk to personnel, the public, property, or the environment.
• Support environmental protection measures, including control of spillages, waste, watercourses, and sensitive ground conditions.

• Strong awareness of health and safety.
• Ability to work in outdoor and remote site conditions.
• Reliable, organised, and proactive approach.

• Site‑based role, working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Travel between investigation locations along the Carnaig to Fanellan route.
• Working in rural or remote locations.
• Early starts or extended site hours depending on project requirements.
• Coordination with drilling crews, plant operators, and subcontractors.
