Overview
This Ultrasound Technologist position performs diagnostic ultrasound imaging including a variety of procedures (invasive and non-invasive) such as biopsies, routine OB/GYN, vascular venous and arterial, abdomen and small parts, intra-cavity, and color Doppler. The technologist must demonstrate strong critical thinking, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving abilities while ensuring the safety, comfort, and dignity of patients under their care. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to educate and support patients who may be under physical or emotional stress, to follow physicians’ verbal orders and imaging protocols, and to multitask effectively within inpatient, emergency department, and outpatient settings.
The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for obtaining information such as patient identity, history, and reviewing medical records for appropriateness of the exam, along with documentation accuracy. The role requires a commitment to lifelong learning to increase knowledge of the field, diseases, and evolving procedures, while delivering excellent customer service.
Responsibilities- 60% Produces quality images by selecting appropriate technical factors, equipment, and transducer settings. Verifies patient orders, reviews exam appropriateness, obtains patient history, explains procedures, and addresses patient concerns to foster comfort. Determines if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes and differentiates between normal and pathologic findings using independent judgment during the exam.
- 20% Independently operates sonographic equipment, communicates diagnostic findings, manages daily department operations, patient scheduling, equipment maintenance, reports equipment failures, and participates in quality assessment. Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies.
- 20% Applies appropriate sterilization techniques and maintains documentation accuracy of logs, charts, forms, and records in paper and electronic formats. Complies with The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local regulatory standards.
- Analyzes sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician.
- Maintains focus and flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
- Assists in instruction and training of residents, new hires, and students.
- Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations; prepares equipment and supplies; observes sterile techniques; assists physicians and other clinicians as needed.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients during ultrasound care.
- Delivers quality patient care, uses universal precautions, protects patient confidentiality, and practices appropriate medical ethics.
- Communicates orally and in writing with staff, physicians, and patients.
- Maintains a clean work environment and adequate supplies; provides excellent customer service.
- Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy toward all employees, physicians, and My Michigan Health customers.
- Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends departmental and medical center meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned and provides on-call coverage as needed across departments within the coverage area.
- Flexibility to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays; may be required to alternate shifts.
- Performs other related duties as required by authorized personnel.
- My Michigan Health technology proficiency and competency in Microsoft Windows is expected.
