Summary

This position is designed for Alpena Community College Nursing students currently enrolled in the Clinical Nursing Program. Employees will work as either Patient Safety Companions or Patient Care Technicians, depending on eligibility and progress in the nursing program, throughout their education  Patient Safety Companion provides close observation for patients requiring continuous protection from harm, reporting directly to a unit or department leader for oversight.

The Clinical Assistant supports RNs and LPNs in ensuring patient safety, comfort, and cleanliness.


Responsibilities

A Day in the Life of a Patient Safety Companion at My Michigan Health:

  • (20%) Provides standby assistance during patient ambulation, transport, and helps with tasks like meals under RN direction.
  • (25%) Maintains a safe, clean environment, follows safety protocols and PPE use, and upholds confidentiality.
  • (20%) Documents observations accurately and promptly as directed by the RN.
  • (20%) Communicates significant patient information to the RN immediately, following emergency procedures when necessary.
  • (20%) Remains alert, calm, professional, and continuously observes the patient.
  • A Day in the Life of a Patient Care Technician at My Michigan Health:

  • (20%) Assesses patient care needs across different age groups and performs related tasks tailored to individual needs.
  • (20%) Plans and prioritizes patient care to meet healthcare needs.
  • (20%) Supports nursing care through appropriate actions.
  • (20%) Evaluates care effectiveness to ensure quality and timely completion of patient issues.
  • (20%) Demonstrates self-management, accountability, and effective communication, while also contributing to team development.
  • Certifications and Licensures

    N/A

    Required Education

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Current enrollment in ACC Nursing Program
    • CNA, LPN, EMT, MA, or PCT certification or completion of one semester of nursing clinical education for Patient Care Technician role

    Other Information

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Computer skills required
    • Good organizational skills, teamwork, and ability to work under pressure
    • Good judgment and interpersonal skills for effective communication
    • Operate equipment as per orientation, policies, and procedures
    • Participate in training and competencies related to the role
    • Perform role-specific skills as outlined during orientation
