Occupational Therapist (OT)

Location: Alpena, MI
Schedule: Full-time | Day Shift | Flexible Hours
Sign-on Bonus: $15,000 (2-year commitment)
Starting Rate: $32.72/hr and up, based on experience

Position Summary

The Occupational Therapist provides patient-centered care focused on improving independence and quality of life. Using assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation, this position ensures optimal function and recovery in accordance with occupational therapy standards, physician orders, and governing policies. The OT also delegates responsibilities appropriately to Occupational Therapist Assistants and Aides while collaborating with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve treatment goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate patients using formal and informal testing to assess skeletal, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, developmental, social, and cognitive function.
  • Develop and implement individualized, goal-specific treatment plans based on assessment data and patient tolerance.
  • Document and update treatment regimes and plans of care to reflect changes in patient condition and progress.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers about their condition, treatment rationale, prognosis, and adaptive strategies for improved independence.
  • Coordinate care and treatment schedules based on patient needs, frequency, and duration.
  • Supervise Occupational Therapist Assistants, Home Health Aides, and students in compliance with affiliate and regulatory standards.
  • Recommend adaptive/supportive equipment and coordinate procurement with appropriate representatives or suppliers.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for patient progress, billing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members through meetings, conferences, and case management.
  • Promote education and development among staff, students, and other healthcare professionals using effective teaching methods.
  • Support process improvement and program development within the department and organization.
  • Represent and promote occupational therapy services in the community and within My Michigan Health.
Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Licensure & Certifications

  • OTR (Occupational Therapist Registered) – Current Michigan license or eligibility required.
  • NBCOT Certification – National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) – Must be obtained within 1 month of hire or transfer.
  • AOTA Membership preferred.

Experience & Skills

  • Successful completion of orientation and competency requirements per affiliate standards.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient and team interactions.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and time management abilities.
  • Competency with Microsoft Windows and electronic medical record systems.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships with the healthcare team.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical Demand Level: Medium
    • Lift/carry: 21–50 lbs occasionally; 20 lbs frequently.
    • Frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
  • Must be able to wear PPE and follow OSHA safety guidelines.
  • Exposure to potentially stressful situations involving patients and families.
  • Regular and predictable attendance required.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks while maintaining focus and composure.
