Over a year, we provide high-quality literacy and STEAM‑infused learning to more than 3,000 children, ages 6 weeks through Pre‑K; give 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatics, camps, leadership programs, and employment opportunities;

and engage over 25,000 volunteers and donors.

Under the direction of the After school Program Director(s) and Site Director, the Site Counselor is responsible for leading assigned groups in planned activities that support the program’s goals, building on the skills needed to succeed in school. All decisions must be guided by Bright from the Start and YMCA standards, with emphasis on member service, program knowledge, safety, and communication.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a minimum credential that meets BFTS requirement and HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Have prior experience working with school‑age children in a group setting; licensed setting and supervision experience is a plus.
  • Have current evidence of successful completion of biennial training in CPR/First Aid.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Classroom, Zoom, and related internet platforms.
  • Must receive a cleared GCIC/NCIC and fingerprint check via Bright From the Start before working; annual checks each school year.
Ongoing Responsibilities
  • Operate the program according to BFTS and YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Create an environment with activities and instruction that support program goals.
  • Deliver the program in compliance with YMCA and BFTS regulations.
  • Discuss and report any concerns with the Site Director.
  • Maintain personal files to remain in compliance with Bright From the Start and the YMCA.
  • Compile attendance records and other pertinent information required by the program.
  • Coordinate supply orders with the Site Director.
  • Attend scheduled BFTS, YMCA, and other trainings; maintain annual training hours.
  • Consult with the Site Director on student development or behavior concerns.
  • Provide input into program planning and development.
  • Complete monthly self‑assessments of the program.
  • Assist students with virtual learning assignments as required by their school district.
  • Perform other duties related to delivering a quality after school program.
  • Implement YMCA safety protocols, including COVID, and conduct wellness checks.
