Job Summary

The Nurse Manager – Main Operating Room is a professional Registered Nurse responsible for providing strategic leadership, operational oversight, and clinical excellence within the perioperative environment. This role ensures high-quality surgical care, staff engagement, resource optimization, and positive patient outcomes.

The Nurse Manager leads a designated OR service or unit, oversees staff development, manages clinical and financial performance, and maintains a safe, collaborative, and high-performing work culture. The role upholds nursing professional practice standards, supports patient advocacy, and drives continuous quality improvement.

Core ResponsibilitiesResources & Operational Management
  • Provide leadership for unit operations, staff coordination, and patient-centered care delivery.
  • Serve as the unit’s chief retention and safety officer, protecting and optimizing human and material resources.
  • Analyze and manage financial performance; use LEAN and quality improvement strategies to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Oversee staffing, onboarding, scheduling, and workforce engagement.
Interdisciplinary Teamwork & Collaboration
  • Communicate effectively with staff, providers, and leadership on clinical, operational, and organizational priorities.
  • Foster a respectful, collaborative workplace and resolve conflict using constructive methods.
  • Build strong partnerships across departments to ensure effective perioperative operations.
  • Support team development and create an environment that attracts and retains top clinical talent.
Exemplary Practice & Outcomes
  • Promote high standards of clinical competence within the Main OR.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical standards, professional practice models, corporate policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Use data, technology, and evidence-based practices to drive outcomes and process improvements.
  • Support orientation, training, and ongoing competency of OR staff.
Professional Development & Leadership
  • Contribute to development of strategic and operational goals for the surgical service line.
  • Participate in committees, task forces, and leadership initiatives within the organization.
  • Apply healthcare financing knowledge to manage budgets, measure outcomes, and monitor performance.
  • Encourage continuous learning for self and staff.
Evidence-Based Practice & Quality
  • Support nursing research, performance improvement, and evaluation of clinical products/services.
  • Evaluate risk, ensure safety standards, and maintain compliance with accrediting bodies and regulatory requirements.
  • Use data analytics and technology to guide decision-making for operational and clinical excellence.
Required QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) — Required
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) — Preferred
Licensure & Certifications
  • Active RN License (Single-State or Multi-State Compact)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification — Required
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of progressive nursing management experience — Required
Skills
  • Strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare operations, budgeting, and staffing models
  • Ability to lead change, apply systems thinking, and manage complex workflows
  • Expertise in quality, safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance
