Position: Associate Engineer/ Engineer

Associate Engineer (Water) $54.47‑$68.09 hourly ($9,442.08‑$11,802.58 monthly, $‑$ annually)
Engineer (Water) $63.88‑$79.85 hourly ($11,072.83‑$13,841.00 monthly, $‑$ annually)
Appointment will be made at the Associate Engineer or Engineer level depending on experience and qualifications.

The Pasadena Water and Power Department, Water Division, is seeking to fill two vacancies at either the Associate Engineer or Engineer level. One position works in the Water Facilities group and the other in the Water Resources & Planning group
.

In the Water Facilities group
, the Associate Engineer or Engineer will oversee design and construction, prepare specifications, and administer contracts for a variety of water infrastructure projects related to pipelines, groundwater wells, booster stations, reservoirs, and other water-related facilities. The incumbent will also make general engineering calculations, gather technical data, prepare reports, provide engineering support for operations and maintenance teams, and participate in the preparation of project budgets.

In the Water Resources & Planning group
, the Associate Engineer or Engineer will focus on long‑term water supply planning and integrated resource management. Key responsibilities include conducting water supply and demand projections, developing and updating master plans and integrated resources plans, preparing and checking for accuracy regulatory reports, supporting regional water resource coordination, and contributing to grant applications and funding strategies. The incumbent will be working on the Water System and Resources Plan (“WSRP”) update, analyze data and modeling scenarios to inform sustainable water management decisions and support strategic planning efforts.

The ideal candidate for the Water Facilities group will possess a strong background in design and construction management, innovation, creativity, and strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain relationships with contractors, vendors, outside agencies, and internal staff.

The ideal candidate for the Water Resources & Planning group takes initiative and accountability on producing work products, with a focus on the details of the work content and the final product. They will also possess a strong background in data analysis and interpretation, supply and demand projections, interpersonal and communication skills, establishing and maintaining relationships with contractors, vendors, outside agencies, and internal staff.

  • Directs and prepares drawings and specifications for a variety of departmental projects or programs; makes general engineering calculations in connection with field and office assignments; conducts environmental studies and prepares reports and required documents; responds to complaints and recommends solutions; ensures safety requirements and standards; uses computer technology to solve problems and perform assignments.
  • Participates in project management as part of a team; performs general engineering review analysis of designs and checks calculations; receives and checks applications and routine engineering plans submitted for permits; reviews for code compliance; prepares specifications for proposals; reviews designs and evaluates proposals; evaluates bids; negotiates terms; prepares agenda reports for contract award recommendations; prepares contracts; develops schedules; conducts job walks;

    performs routine inspections at project sites for conformance with specifications and standards; performs tests and evaluates performance; identifies problems and recommends solutions; monitors costs; confers with other professional and technical staff to coordinate work; writes and processes Change Orders.
