The Lifeguard under the supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor or designeesupervises the pool and decks of swimming facility; enforces regulations and ensures adherence to water safety rules and practices.
The ideal candidate will be dependable and able to facilitate swimming lessons. This person must also be Red Cross certified in Lifeguarding and be a proficient swimmer. To be successful in this position, individuals must be able to work in a team setting, focus on safety, and be attentive to the needs of the customer.
CertificationsRed Cross certifications must be attached to the online application at the time of submission to participate in this examination process.
Work ScheduleAquatics staff must work from Monday, June 8, 2026 through Saturday, August 8, 2026. Dates subject to change depending on program need. Work hours vary (up to 24 hours/week) depending on assignment, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
Mandatory TrainingWeek of June 8, 2026. Employees are required to attend.
Swim TestSaturday, March 21, 2026 between 10:00am – 12:00pm and Saturday, March 28, 2026 between 10:00am – 12:00pm.
LocationHonorable John J. Kennedy Pool 1081 N. Fair Oaks Ave, Pasadena, CA 91103. Applicants must be able to attend. There will be no rescheduling.

- Supervises the pool and decks of swimming facility.
- Enforces regulations and ensures adherence to water safety rules and practices.
- Effects rescues by responding to participants in danger by performing water rescues and administering first aid.
- Prevents accidents.
- Responds quickly and effectively to emergencies.
- Assists with program activities.
- Physical strength and agility to lift up to 75 lbs, bend in all directions, squeeze with arms and hands, pull and lower up to 75 lbs.
- Participates in pool maintenance; and performs related duties as assigned.

Required American Red Cross certifications:
Lifeguarding Certification. Must attach to online application.
Must have ability to swim 500 yards in 10 minutes, 30 seconds.
Selection ProcessThe selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation, timed swim test, and department-level interviews.
Vacancy InformationSummer vacancies occurring in the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department may be filled as a result of this examination process. Candidates may be offered positions with lower stated qualifications than those for which they have applied/qualified based upon operational determinations of the Recreation and Aquatics supervisors.
PROBATIONARY WORK TEST PERIOD = At-will (Summer Temporary Employment). FLSA = Non-Exempt. UNIT = HOURLY.
Candidates selected for this position will be required to attend mandatory training sessions and other in-service trainings week of June 8, 2026. Failure to attend these sessions may be cause for termination.
Candidates are required to successfully complete medical examinations including drug screen and a criminal background live scan screen consistent with current state and federal law.
