Position: LPN - 3pm-11pm - Operating Room

LPN – 3 pm to 11 pm – Operating Room

UPMC Altoona is hiring an LPN and is offering a generous sign‑on bonus for qualified candidates. The position is an evening shift with on‑call duty; applicants must be able to respond to on‑call within 30 minutes.

Sign‑On Bonus
  • $7,500 bonus for nurses with one or more years of experience
  • $5,000 bonus for nurses with less than one year of experience (includes GPNs)
  • Two‑year work commitment required for bonus‑eligible hires

Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for meals and nourishment; serve and collect trays; provide or assist with feedings, including tube feeding; give water and between‑meal nourishment
  • Perform other assigned duties such as cleaning utility room cupboards, collecting and bagging soiled linen, and sterilizing and storing instruments and equipment
  • Assist patients with toileting; collect and label specimens; help patients get in and out of bed, turn, lift, position, and ambulate
  • Use appropriate assessment and intervention techniques for patients with co‑occurring disorders (mental health and substance abuse)
  • Observe, report, and document all unusual symptoms, condition changes, and care delivered per unit policies
  • Provide recreational and/or diversional activities as directed
  • Assist in direct patient care and respond effectively in emergency situations
  • Adhere to universal precautions and occupational exposure policies
  • Use restraints and protective mechanisms as directed; complete documentation
  • Handle and store medications, clean medication cart, and keep team leader informed of medication issues; administer medications (oral, IV, IM, SC, rectal, vaginal, topical, ocular) as ordered by a licensed physician or dentist under RN supervision
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medications and IV therapy per policy; count narcotics at shift end; administer PRN medications following RN assessment; record all medication data accurately; follow Pyxis System standards
  • Answer nurse call system promptly
  • Escort patients to and from departments or divisions
  • Maintain patient room and equipment, perform terminal cleaning of unit and equipment when environmental service aides are absent
  • Assist RN in patient admission, orientation, transfer, and discharge; follow established policies; assist other team members as needed
  • Provide care conducive to patient safety and comfort; follow RN instructions and routines
  • Administer assigned treatments such as catheterizations, irrigations, suctioning, enemas, dressing changes, and perineal care; assist with other procedures as directed
Education & Formal Training Required
  • Temporary permit or valid LPN license in Pennsylvania; must pass Altoona Hospital pharmacology challenge exam
  • CPR certification required
  • Graduates outside PA or prior to August 25, 2012, who did not complete a PA‑approved LPN IV course must complete a 5‑hour online module, an in‑person 3‑hour course provided by UPMC Altoona Education Department within 4 months of hire or transfer
Licensure, Certifications, & Clearances
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) per AHA standards; must complete didactic and skills demonstration within 30 days of hire
  • LPN or Temporary Practice Permit (TPP); must complete licensure exam within 4 months of hire or within one year of graduation; GPNs must take exam within 4 months of start date or risk termination or demotion
  • Act 33 renewal
  • Act 34 renewal
  • Act 73 FBI clearance renewal
