Purposeof the Job
Occupational safety specialist will analyze work environments and procedures, inspect workplaces for regulatory compliance, and design programs to prevent injury and environmental damage. The specialist will develop, implement and oversee written safety programs for site compliance and sustainability, and maintain management information systems to identify hazards.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities- Monitor and analyze EH&S data and calculate metrics and key performance indicators.
- Provide quality assurance and oversight on safety programs and systems including OSHA compliance, safety committees, audit reports, etc.
- Problem‑solve workplace conditions that may cause worker injury or illness through chemical, physical, ergonomic or biological exposures.
- Lead internal partners to develop and maintain EH&S scorecards.
- Collect data and participate in annual OSHA reporting.
- Support EH&S communications, including safety meeting development and distribution, risk alerts, etc.
- Provide administrative support for web‑based safety systems.
- Detect hazardous working conditions and safety problems; check equipment and work areas regularly; report or correct unsafe conditions.
- Monitor safety issues after corrective action and ensure continued compliance.
- Develop corrective action plans for internal/external audits, inspections and incidents.
- Lead environmental, health and safety audits.
- Review and author work plans and job hazard analyses daily as part of the operational support.
- Maintain and analyze records and provide reports on compliance performance.
- Identify hazards and collect samples of potentially toxic materials for analysis.
- Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment and practices for compliance with corporate and government health and safety standards and OSHA regulations.
- Design and implement workplace processes and procedures to protect workers from hazardous conditions.
- Investigate accidents and incidents to identify causes and prevention strategies.
- Conduct training on safety, health, security and emergency preparedness.
- Examine lighting, equipment, ventilation and other conditions that affect employee health and safety.
- Seek to save money by lowering insurance premiums, workers’ compensation and government fines.
- Develop and conduct employee safety and training programs.
- Inspect workplaces for chemical, physical, radiological and biological hazards to protect workers, property, environment and the public.
- Work with engineers and physicians to control or fix hazardous conditions or equipment.
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, safety, or a related scientific or technical field (engineering, biology, or chemistry) with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in petrochemical, chemical or refinery industries.
- High School Diploma with 15+ years’ experience in petrochemical, chemical or refinery industries.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, ACGIH and EHS legislation, regulations and standards.
- Technical expertise in Hazardous Energy Control, Electrical Safety, Line Break, Confined Space Entry, Elevated Work, etc.
- Preferred:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP). - Ergonomics: evaluate relationships between people, environment and equipment to improve safety and productivity.
- Health advocate: protect people and environment from hazardous radiation or chemical exposures; enforce heat stress OSHA guidelines.
- Industrial or occupational hygienist: identify and monitor exposure to health hazards (lead, asbestos, noise, poisons, communicable diseases, etc.).
