JobOverview
The Onsite Safety Officer is responsible for implementing, enforcing, and monitoring safety and health programs on active construction sites. This role ensures compliance with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and client requirements, with a strong emphasis on electrical safety, hazard mitigation, and injury prevention.
The Safety Officer serves as the primary safety presence in the field, providing leadership, oversight, training, and stop-work authority to maintain a safe work environment.
Job Duties Safety Oversight & Compliance- Enforce company Safety Management System (SMS) and site-specific safety plans
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC, and client safety standards
- Conduct daily site safety inspections and audits
- Monitor contractor and subcontractor safety performance
- Lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Pre-Task Plans
- Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors
- Implement corrective actions and track closure
- Verify controls for high-risk activities (electrical work, lifting, confined space, work at heights)
- Verify electrical safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Arc-flash boundaries
- Grounding and bonding
- Energized work permits (if applicable)
- Confirm workers are qualified and authorized for electrical tasks
- Conduct site safety orientations and toolbox talks
- Provide coaching and mentoring to field personnel
- Verify employee training, certifications, and PPE compliance
- Promote a strong safety culture and stop-work authority
- Respond to incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions
- Lead or assist with incident investigations
- Complete incident reports and corrective action plans
- Coordinate medical response and emergency procedures
- Maintain site safety records, including JHAs, inspections, training logs, incident reports
- Submit daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports
- Assist with audits and client safety reviews
- Has full Stop-Work Authority when unsafe conditions exist
- Authorized to remove personnel from site for safety violations
- Authorized to recommend disciplinary action for repeated non-compliance
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification (required)
- Knowledge of electrical construction safety practices
- Ability to read and interpret safety plans, procedures, and drawings
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- NCCER Safety Certification
- NFPA 70E training
- First Aid / CPR / AED certification
- Experience on electrical substations, transmission, or industrial projects
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
- Minimum 2–5 years construction safety experience
- Experience in electrical or heavy-industrial environments strongly preferred
- Ability to walk active construction sites for extended periods
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated work areas
- Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
- Ability to wear required PPE (FR clothing, hard hat, safety boots, etc.)
