Position: 2025-2026 Secondary School Counselor (District Wide)

Secondary School Counselor (District Wide)

Open until filled after 5-day required posting. Must be fully certified for the position by 1/1/2026.

Primary Purpose

Provide, as a member of the counseling department staff, a comprehensive guidance program to students and specifically provide services to meet the special needs of the assigned caseload; consult with teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students educational, social, and personal needs; and provide support to other school educational programs.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • Masters degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas school counselor certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development
  • Working knowledge of educational programs and the ability to guide students through the programs
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communications skills - verbal and written
  • Ability to develop a schedule yet maintain flexibility
  • Knowledge of principals of developmental guidelines
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff
Work Conditions
  • Tools/Equipment Used:
    Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals;
    Microsoft Office and various computer programs
  • Posture:
    Prolonged walking, standing and/or sitting; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
  • Motion:
    Repetitive hand motions including keyboarding and writing; reaching
  • Lifting:
    Lifting and carrying (less than 40 pounds)
  • Environment:
    Must be able to work with frequent interruptions and maintain professional demeanor under stress; must be able to work occasional after regular work hours; some in-district travel; attend off-campus activities, meetings, professional development and functions
  • Mental Demands:
    Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to problem solve and make sound judgments in a shortened period of time
  • Regular attendance is an essential function.
Experience

Minimum Experience:

  • Three years successful classroom teaching experience as evidenced by performance evaluations
Major Responsibilities And Duties
  • Consult and counsel with students, teachers, parents, and administrative staff concerning students needs in resolving personal and educational problems.
  • Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.
  • Maintain student records as required and protect each student’s confidentiality.
  • Keep accurate documentation and records.
  • Serve as liaison between school and community.
  • Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems such as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the special education program to school personnel, parents and community agencies.
  • Participate in the total school guidance program.
  • Participate in continuing study and staff development activities which will improve professional skills.
  • Take an active role in interpreting the schools and districts goals and objectives to students, parents, and the community.
  • Counsel individual students and small groups with presenting needs and concerns.
  • Use an effective referral process to assist students and others to use special programs and services.
  • Develop, implement and teach the district developmental guidance curriculum.
  • Collaborate with other school and district staff to design and/or administer testing and appraisal programs for students.
  • Abide by State and Federal laws, District policies, campus expectations and Texas Educator Code of Ethics.
  • Perform such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
