What You’ll Do

Manufacturing Engineers function as the connection between design and production by optimizing the manufacturing process. They perform duties and tasks that are vital to ensuring the reliability and integrity of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. Manufacturing Engineers are responsible for providing insight and guidance on manufacturing techniques and other relevant manufacturing processes, related to Special Tooling, Weapon Material, and Production Operations.

They work with skilled crafts, engineering technicians, production technicians, and design/materials engineers to develop solutions to fabrication and product flows issues. Typical day-to-day responsibilities of a manufacturing engineer include the development of designs, installations, maintenance and evaluation of manufacturing processes and equipment.

  • Monitor current operations and determine more efficient production processes
  • Identifying weaknesses within a production area and working with production management to develop a solution that prevents recurrence of issues
  • Providing support to floor level crews to implement changes critical to the achievement of manufacturing goals
  • Evaluate production processes and facilities and identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, usability, and performance of operations and equipment
  • Analyzing operations, designing workflows and production processes, reducing inefficiency, and ensuring that final products meet the established quality standards
  • Design systems that maximize productivity, reduce wastefulness and production issues, are cost-efficient, and ensure high product quality
  • Executes projects, both tactical and strategic, that enhance productivity
  • Create, develop, and implement efficient manufacturing systems, reducing costs while maintaining standards of operations

Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program in the United States or designated equivalents from Canada or Mexico, the Washington Accord, or the list of substantially equivalent as documented by ABET with a minimum 3.0/4.0 cumulative GPA.
  • OR Master’s degree in engineering with a minimum 3.3/4.0 cumulative GPA.
  • There is a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer and confirmed by transcript. Beyond 4 years from graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA as a requirement for hire.
DOE Order 426.2A Requirements
  • In addition to the above requirements, the applicant must also meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1-year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2A alternative). DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.
