POSITION SUMMARY:

The Direct Support Staff works under the general supervision of the Home Supervisor. The DSS shares responsibilities with other staff for the daily operations of the group home, including supervision, training, assessment, and assistance of the residents served by Advo Companies, Inc. Hours include evenings, weekends, and overnights.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • GED, High School Diploma, or ABLE test (provided on site) along with 3 letters of recommendation.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Must have a good driving record.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a regular work schedule.
  • Willing to work hours other than those scheduled, including overtime, and be flexible to work in other Advo Companies Inc. group homes.
  • One-year experience in human delivery services preferred.
  • Ability to complete training in CPR, First Aid, and Prevention of Aggressive Behavior.
  • Must have a wristwatch with a second hand.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Primary Duties:

  • Ensure health and safety: Notify medical personnel of symptoms of distress/illness, maintain a hazard-free environment, conduct evacuation drills, accompany individuals to medical appointments, monitor and document seizures, restraints, and other time-sensitive events.
  • Personal hygiene and grooming: Assist individuals with toileting, bathing, hair and nail care, shaving, oral hygiene, dressing, and menstrual care (female staff only). Ensure grooming supplies are available and in good repair, and notify supervisor of needs.
  • Meal preparation: Prepare meals per diet plans, serve meals/snacks, practice sanitation, and ensure proper use of adaptive feeding equipment and guidelines. Maintain cleanliness of utensils and eating areas.
  • Active Treatment: Conduct and document training and daily living skills, promote independence, and integrate skill development outside the home such as in school or work environments.
  • Individuals' rights: Maintain confidentiality, facilitate contact with family and friends, treat everyone respectfully, ensure access to personal property, supervise trust fund use, and report rights violations.
  • Transportation: Safely transport individuals, maintain valid Texas Driver's License and vehicle condition.
  • Home operation: Maintain cleanliness, perform duties when other staff are unavailable, notify supervisor of supplies and repairs, complete laundry, and care for equipment.
