Overview

Responsible for leading the operations and appearance of Wanzek Construction’s equipment at the jobsite level. This position will be supervised directly by project personnel but will also work with Shop Manager to plan and schedule work or seek advice or assistance.

Responsibilities
  • Fleet maintenance management
  • Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on all equipment, troubleshooting and/or determining if repairs will be done in the field, Wanzek’s shop, a dealership or other method
  • Travel to jobsites for repairs, inspections, review field maintenance to ensure it is done properly, and review maintenance reports
  • Onsite field repairs/troubleshooting
  • Update the equipment locator list and equipment and tool inventory
  • Develop and maintain an equipment maintenance tracking database
  • Maintain proper record keeping
  • Update tool inventory
  • Operate equipment to diagnose problems and inspect equipment for defects
  • Ensure all equipment has an equipment  (logo, unit numbers, digital photos)
  • Verify USDOT annual inspections in trucks and on file in office
  • Ensure equipment safety (e.g., backup alarms, lights, seat belts, fire extinguishers, rigging, etc.)
  • Show expertise in all basic and complex machines, including crane safety (anti‑two blocks, rigging, crane maintenance daily log book/annual inspection, etc.); investigate or question others to ensure logs and two blocks are correct, etc.
  • Occasionally travel to jobsites for repairs, inspections, review field maintenance to ensure it is done properly and review maintenance reports
  • Review with operators and superintendent’s maintenance records and major repairs to make crews self‑sufficient and responsible for their own maintenance
  • Perform work as outlined on repair order with efficiency and accuracy in accordance with dealership and factory standards
  • Diagnose cause of any malfunction and perform repair
  • Effectively communicate to obtain needed parts
  • Examine assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended
  • Document all work performed and recommended on the repair order
  • Road test vehicles when required
  • Identify machinery defects or malfunctions and complete repair
  • Keep shop area neat and clean
  • Maintain and be accountable for all shop tools and manuals, ensuring they are returned to the proper place and in the same condition as received
  • Understand, keep abreast of, and comply with federal, state and local regulations such as hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right‑to‑Know, etc.
  • Operate all tools and equipment in a safe manner
  • Report any safety issues immediately to management
Qualifications Education and Work Experience Requirements:
  • One‑year certificate from college or technical school in Diesel or Automotive Technology and two or more years of relevant experience.
  • One or more of the following certifications:
    Electrical diagnostics and repair, A/C system diagnostics and repair, Welding, OEM certification (JD Tech, CAT Tech, Case IH Tech, Komatsu Tech, Ford, Kenworth, Liebherr)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Take reasonable care of own and others’ health and safety and of those who may be affected by the day‑to‑day delivery of this role by taking personal responsibility for working toward Wanzek’s Zero Injury principles
  • Qualified to drive the 1‑ton rig on site and from project to project
  • Ability to diagnose complex problems in systems including mechanical, hydraulic and electrical
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of a 3rd‑party mechanic
  • Ability to track and maintain records of completed work and update status of open work orders
  • Minimum level of rework
  • High level of efficiency (80% of efficiency or higher)
  • Ability to work independently
