Position: Communications Specialist II or III – Ames Laboratory

Ames Laboratory is seeking a Science Communications Specialist II or III to lead efforts within the Communications Office to support the Laboratory’s communications strategies related to scientific discovery, institutional excellence, and public outreach. Ames Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded National Laboratory operated through contractual agreement with Iowa State University (ISU) and is dedicated to materials science and ground‑breaking fundamental research in chemistry and physics.

The position serves under the direction of the Communications Manager, and performs advanced communications‑related work to further Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University, and DOE mission and objectives. The position will be responsible for all aspects of written science communication for Ames Laboratory, including news releases, media advisories, talking points, fact sheets, articles for web pages, and a variety of other communications products for both external and internal audiences.

In addition to the above duties, the Communicationslers Specialist III will assist with the implementation of a strategic communications program to help build a brand image andwill be responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining internal and external policies and programs.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to combine creativity, science translation, and communications strategy into content that is highly engaging and appropriately pitched for Ames Laboratory stakeholders and audiences. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and organizational skills with innate attention to editorial detail. Conscientious independent work habits, paired with the ability to creatively collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups, is essential for success in this role.

The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple priorities and project deadlines simultaneously, and be comfortable with and responsive to collaborative review of work product.

Qualifications
  • Communications Specialist II: Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience.
  • Communications Specialist III: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of relatedowel experience.

(The Department of homelessать has directed Ames Lab to determine the vaccination status of its employees. Upon hire, employees must complete an attestation regarding their vaccination status. Anyone who does not attest to being fully vaccinated will need to follow the protocol for those who are not fully vaccinated and comply with a weekly COVID‑19 screening testing requirement.)
