Transportation Engineer Associate – Design Bureau
The Iowa Department of Transportation’s Transportation Development Division is hiring a full‑time Transportation Engineer Associate to work on highway design projects that enhance Iowa’s and the nation’s transportation systems. The position is part of an interdisciplinary team that collaborates with many stakeholders to develop innovative transportation improvement plans.
Responsibilities- Participate in engineering studies of transportation system improvements and develop alternatives to meet project goals.
- Analyze transportation engineering data to determine the optimal operating characteristics for proposed highway improvement projects.
- Produce highway designs that comply with national (AASHTO) and Iowa DOT design guidance.
- Work with a team to balance safety, mobility, environmental, property, cost, and long‑term maintenance considerations.
- Perform design and engineering analysis for small to large, highly complex highway improvement projects using advanced civil engineering software, including 3D modeling and visualizations.
- Prepare roadway construction plans that clearly and accurately convey all project aspects.
- Advanced software application skill and experience working in a 3D design environment.
- Ability to analyze challenges, define solution alternatives, and proactively solve problems.

- Engineer certificate issued by the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners within 24 months of hire.
- Professional Engineer licensure required within 6 years of hire for continued employment as Transportation Engineer Associate.
Days, Monday through Friday. Flex available.

Minimum Qualification Requirements- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering, or engineering management.
- Verification of graduation with major coursework in one of the above fields.
Applicants hired with verification of graduation must graduate with a bachelor’s degree within 10 months of hire.
Required Certifications & Licenses- Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
- Professional Engineer licensure by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
