Position located in Ames, IA. This role requires travel and is not remote.

Job Description

As the Safety Manager, you will work with and through management to ensure the safety of personnel and compliance with safety and environmental procedures of local, state, and federal regulations including OSHA, MSHA, and DOT. You will support other Safety Managers, Supervisors, and staff to align with company and client policies, conduct training, observations, audits, and maintain safety files and reports.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Advise Corporate Office on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.
  • Assist Corporate Safety and Site Superintendent in ensuring compliance and training of safety policies in accordance with OSHA, MSHA, DOT and other regulations.
  • Travel to various locations as needed.
  • Work with Site Supervision to anticipate PPE needs and schedule training.
  • Conduct training for employees in safety practices, including new hire orientations and job‑specific tasks.
  • Verify Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and required permits are completed and hazards mitigated.
  • Hold daily safety meetings with all employees at field locations and maintain weekly summary logs.
  • Conduct audits to verify employees are trained to identify hazards and controls.
  • Maintain safety files, records, and reports.
  • Report incidents, near misses, and safety infractions to Corporate Office and investigate promptly.
  • Perform safety hazard assessments, inspections, surveys, and prepare findings and corrective recommendations; follow‑up to ensure implementation (10 audits per week).
  • Conduct observation audits to improve work practices and training.
  • Recognize and provide training in areas of deficiency.
  • Coach personnel to implement corrective measures through hazard assessments and SOPs.
  • Report all near misses and incidents to Safety Director promptly.
  • Assisting with investigations of all incidents.
  • Attend weekly Supervisor safety training meetings and monthly Safety Manager meetings.
  • Understand regulations applicable to the work performed.
  • Assist in the development, evaluation, and upgrading of safety programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience with OSHA regulatory requirements and training in construction and industrial operations.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a direct safety role.
  • Experience in writing reports and business correspondence; presenting information to senior management, site supervision, clients, and employees.
  • Experience in industrial settings is preferred.

Work Availability
  • Approximately 70% of travel time is required in the field.
  • Maintains acceptable attendance per management requirements.
  • Available to work weekends and holidays as needed.
Physical Abilities
  • Lifting and moving up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Climbing ladders frequently.
  • Working outside in weather conditions, standing for 8+ hours a day.
  • Clear vision with safety glasses.
  • Complete tasks such as loading/unloading, cleaning, and shoveling.
  • Safe performance of confined space work.
Certifications
  • OSHA 30‑hour minimum.
  • Safety Trainer status preferred.
Licenses
  • Class E driver’s license required to drive a company vehicle.
