The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies (TECS) in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst is seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students, and staff as an Assistant Professor of Ele
mentary Mathematics Education
. This is a full-time, tenure track position with a preferred start date of September 1, 2026.
The College offers programs of study leading to baccalaureate, graduate certificate, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. The person hired will conduct research, engage in service, and have a philosophy of teaching and advising that reflects a commitment to social justice, improving learning and instruction, and challenging inequities in science education.
Requirements- Responsibilities include continuing or developing a research agenda on the learning and teaching of mathematics.
- The person hired for this position will work closely with doctoral students to advise them and engage them in the research process.
- They will also participate in the education of preK-6 pre-service and in-service teachers with content related to the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework.
- Teaching will include opportunities in the early childhood and elementary teacher licensure programs, as well as courses in the doctoral program.
- The successful candidate will also be interested in research collaborations with faculty across the college and university as well as schools in need of improvement.
- The candidate will also provide service within the Department, College, University, Commonwealth, and professional organizations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Applicants must possess all of the following qualifications: doctorate in education or a related discipline by the time of the appointment.
- Established publication record or indication of considerable promise.
- Experience teaching or strong potential to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level.
- A proven track record in teaching mathematics in a K-6 setting.
- The ability to work effectively with learners of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- A commitment to social justice in education.
- The ideal candidate will possess one or more of the following additional qualifications:
- Experience in research and/or teaching of elementary math;
- knowledge of learning theory;
- experience working in teacher licensure;
- and experience or potential for securing external funding.
- Typical classroom and office environments.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $79,350 and $116,174 for this position.
