Associate Professor of Music History - Tenure Track
The Department of Music and Dance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks to hire an Associate Professor of Music History (with tenure). This is a full‑time, nine‑month, tenure‑track position at the Associate Professor rank to begin September 1, 2026.
Responsibilities- Maintain a robust research activity of national and international stature.
- Teach a 2/2 load comprising general‑education classes, courses for undergraduate majors and minors, and graduate seminars.
- Supervise undergraduate and graduate research.
- Serve on committees at the department, college, and university level.
- Serve on committees and boards of professional societies and organizations.
- Ph.D. in Music History, Musicology, or Historical Musicology and have been awarded tenure at a comparable university.
- Outstanding research and teaching records appropriate for a senior‑level appointment.
- Record of service at the departmental/university level and in professional societies and organizations.
- Experience teaching large general‑education classes and supervising graduate research is preferred.
The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $90,160 and $125,563 for this position. The low end of the pay range is the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors. The high end reflects an increase above the median salary at this rank within the department for faculty with multiple years of experience.
The specific pay will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required or relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
- Selected candidate will undergo an expedited tenure process upon hiring.
- Position is a 9‑month academic year appointment at 100% FTE with full benefits.
