Reporting to the Assistant Director of Building Maintenance, the Energy and Engineering Manager is responsible for campus‑wide coordination of energy programs, analysis, and the operations and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems across the UMass Amherst campus and outlying stations. The Energy and Engineering Manager plays a key role in advising the University on energy management strategies and CO emission reductions in both operations and capital projects.
The University seeks to achieve significant buildings maintenance improvement and cost savings while minimizing environmental impact by reducing its carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Represents the Physical Plant in the Facilities Planning Division on all matters related to the design, construction, start‑up, and commissioning of new construction and renovation projects.
- Leads, organizes, and supervises the Building Maintenance Engineering team, assigning work and ensuring project timelines are met.
- Oversees staff managing the Building Automation Systems (BAS) to optimize equipment operation, buildings comfort and energy efficiency.
- Develops and maintains a preventive and predictive maintenance program, ensuring alignment with manufacturer recommendations and industry best practices.
- Works effectively as a team member with Facilities & Campus Services, Budget, and other University departments whose direct implementation and planning responsibilities contribute to improvement of building operation and maintenance.
- Plans and supervises the troubleshooting, repair, or replacement of mechanical systems, coordinating with contractors and Facilities Management personnel. Ensures projects stay on schedule and assists in managing service contracts for major HVAC and chiller systems.
- Assists in creating, articulating, and implementing the University's goals and policies for building O&M standards and energy soliciting community support in realizing those goals.
- Develops and pursues programs to reduce the University's carbon footprint and energy costs, working in collaboration with department and campus constituencies towards decarbonization targets.
- Ensures Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) programming is accurate and up to date; all warranty data for new construction and renovations is entered into CMMS.
- Develops and implements training programs to enhance maintenance staff effectiveness.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with union representatives.
- Evaluates and recommends operational and capital improvements to reduce costs and environmental impact. Assists in prioritizing capital budget allocations based on the university priorities and on energy savings analysis.
- Compiles and analyzes energy usage data, tracking conservation efforts and providing reports for operational and capital planning improvements.
