Position Summary
Associate Professor in Computer Systems (Career Track to Full Professor) at VU Amsterdam.

Responsibilities

Set up and lead a new research group in Computer Systems.

Develop a scientific research program supported by external funding.

Contribute to Computer Science Bachelor and Master programs, including the Computer Systems and Infrastructure MSc track.

Oversee governance and leadership responsibilities, including quality assurance and safety within the group.

Research Requirements

PhD in Computer Science or closely related field.

Strong independent research profile with long‑term vision.

Solid and growing publication record in internationally recognised venues.

Active participation in international research community (committee memberships, editorial boards).

Demonstrated ability to acquire external research funding or contribute substantially to funded projects.

Potential to become internationally recognised research leader.

Teaching Requirements

Excellent teaching skills in bachelor’s and master’s courses and supervision of student projects.

Vision for educational development and curriculum innovation.

Experience supervising bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students.

In possession of or willing to obtain University Teaching Qualification (BKO).

Leadership Responsibilities

Intellectual leadership of a research line or thematic group.

Coordination of projects, courses, or small teams.

Responsibility for quality and social safety within the group.

Support colleagues’ development and foster an inclusive, safe working environment.

Career Track Expectations (Towards Full Professor)

Strategic leadership and departmental responsibilities.

Benefits

Associate Professor 2: salary €6,512‑7,904 gross/month, full‑time, scale 13.

Associate Professor 1: salary €6,835‑8,673 gross/month, full‑time, scale 14.

Minimum 0.8 FTE, 18‑month contract with possible tenure after evaluation.

Full‑time 38‑hour week, 232 hours holiday entitlement (40 hours: +96 extra).

8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end‑of‑year bonus.

Solid pension scheme (ABP).

Contribution to commuting expenses.
