Position: Postdoc Researcher on Open Science Project

Your function

Are you enthusiastic about Open Science? Are you curious about the roles that Open Science communities play in promoting the transition to an Open Science research culture? Then this postdoc position in the project “From exception to norm:
Evaluating the contribution of Open Science communities to the transition to an Open Science research culture” is for you!

Using qualitative methods, you will investigate the ways in which Open Science communities support the adoption of Open Science principles and practices with the ultimate aim of developing an evidence‑based model that synthesizes the roles of Open Science communities in the culture shift towards Open Science.

Your tasks
  • Secure ethical approval for the study
  • Design research instruments and conduct participant observation in meetings of Open Science communities
  • Design research instruments and conduct interviews and focus groups with Open Science community members and with researchers
  • Organise data sessions
  • Analyse data using ethnomethodological conversation analysis
  • Write‑up findings for publication
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings to academic and non‑academic audiences
  • Prepare data for archiving and reuse
Your profile

Required

  • A PhD in social sciences (e.g., sociology, anthropology, communication) or a closely related domain
  • Knowledge of and experience with ethnographic research methods
  • Knowledge of and experience with conversation analysis and/or ethnomethodology or willingness to develop these skills
  • Experience with communicating scientific findings to academic and non‑academic audiences

Desirable

  • Knowledge of and experience with Open Science principles and practices
  • Knowledge of the field of science and technology studies (STS)

What do we offer?

You will join a supportive and stimulating team, working directly with dr Bogdana Huma and dr Lotte van Burgsteden, who will offer professional guidance and mentorship. The project also provides excellent opportunities for professional development through participation in national and international research events (conferences, workshops, symposia).

At VU Amsterdam, you contribute to education, research and service for a better world. And that is valuable. So in return for your efforts, we offer you:

  • a salary of minimum € 3.546,00 (scale 10.0) and maximum € 4.412,00 (scale 10.5) gross per month, on a full‑time basis. This is based on UFO profile Researcher 4. The exact salary depends on your education and experience.
  • a position for at least 0.6 FTE. Your employment contract will initially last 6 months. Upon proven suitability and continuation in the same position, there is the possibility of an extension for up to a maximum of another 18 months.

  • A full‑time 38‑hour working week comes with a holiday leave entitlement of 232 hours per year. If you choose to work 40 hours, you have 96 extra holiday leave hours on an annual basis. For part‑timers, this is calculated pro‑rata.
