PhD student (m/f/x) on the subject of probabilistic turbulence models
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) invites applications for a PhD student in the Scientific Computing research group, focusing on probabilistic turbulence models. Turbulent flows affect wind farms, industrial processes and our weather, but it is impossible to compute every swirling eddy. Instead, closure models approximate the impact of the unseen turbulence. The ERC Consolidator project SYMBIOSIS aims to build closure models around the concept of entropy, combining model reduction, stochastic modelling and data assimilation to construct adaptive, probabilistic turbulence models applied to real‑life applications such as wind‑turbine wakes and CO₂ transport.
The PhD candidate will be positioned at CWI and supervised by Dr.
B. Sanderse, with collaboration opportunities at Eindhoven University of Technology where the PhD degree will be awarded. The project builds on related research on structure‑preserving machine learning and model reduction for fluid flows currently running in the Scientific Computing group.
- Completed MSc in applied mathematics, physics or a related discipline.
- Strong expertise in at least one of the following fields: numerical analysis, stochastic methods, generative machine learning, computational fluid dynamics or data assimilation.
- Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, Julia).
- Proven research talent, good academic writing and presentation skills.
- Team player, fully committed to working with other team members of SYMBIOSIS.
- Excellent command of English.
The employment terms are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres (CAO‑onderzoeksinstellingen). The initial labour agreement will be for a period of 18 months and can be extended by 30 months after a positive evaluation. Gross monthly salary is €3,115 in the first year, increasing to €3,989 over the four‑year period. Employees are entitled to a holiday allowance of 8 % of the gross annual salary and a year‑end bonus of 8.33 %.
Flexible scheduling and housing assistance for expat employees are also offered.
Submit a detailed CV, a list of courses taken and grades (BSc + MSc), a copy of the Master thesis, a motivation letter and at least two references. The Final date to receive applications is 31 August 2026. All candidates meeting the required qualifications are encouraged to apply. CWI is an equal opportunity employer; applications are considered regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation or physical abilities.
