Lung cancer and mesothelioma remain among the deadliest cancers worldwide, highlighting the need for more effective and targeted therapies. Our research focuses on developing innovative treatments by targeting the RNA splicing machinery, a promising therapeutic strategy for cancers with a high unmet medical need.
In this project, which runs until the end of 2028, you will contribute to preclinical laboratory research using advanced disease models, including patient-derived organoids and human xenograft tumour models on chicken eggs. You will also investigate why cancer cells are particularly sensitive to disruption of the RNA splicing machinery.
The project combines molecular biology, cell biology and genomics with state-of-the-art technologies such as confocal microscopy and (single-cell) RNA sequencing. Your work will directly contribute to the development of new treatment strategies for patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma.
As a Research Technician, you will play an important role in the day-to-day execution of this research project. You will work closely with researchers to generate high-quality experimental data and contribute to innovative cancer research.
Your responsibilities include:
- planning, preparing and performing molecular and cellular laboratory experiments;
- working with patient-derived organoids, xenograft tumour models and gene delivery, expression and gene silencing techniques;
- documenting, processing and analysing experimental data;
- preparing study reports and maintaining accurate laboratory records;
- presenting research findings during internal meetings and contributing to scientific collaborations.
You enjoy working in a laboratory environment and are motivated to contribute to translational cancer research. You are organised, proactive and enjoy collaborating with colleagues from different scientific disciplines.
You also have:
- a Bachelor's degree from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO) or a Master's degree from a research university (WO) in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, pharmaceutical sciences or a related discipline;
- hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques and mammalian cell culture;
- an affinity for cancer research; experience with organoids, confocal microscopy and/or genomics data analysis is an advantage;
- a structured, accurate and results-oriented approach to laboratory work, combined with strong digital skills;
- excellent communication skills and a good command of English, both written and spoken.
- You will be employed by Amsterdam UMC Research BV.
- A contract for 12 months, with the intention to extend for a total of two years.
- The position starts on 1 January 2027.
- Classification in salary scale 7M: € 3.171 to € 4.492 gross for full-time employment (depending on experience). In addition to a good basic salary, we offer 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Calculate your net salary here .
- Holiday hours: 194.4 per year for full time and a possibility to save additional hours.
- 100% reimbursement for public transport travel costs. If you travel by foot, bicycle, or car, a mileage allowance of €0.21 per km applies (up to a maximum of 40 km one way by car).

You will join the Laboratory Medical Oncology at Amsterdam UMC, located in the ADORE Research and Diagnostics Center. The laboratory offers a dynamic and international research environment where scientists translate molecular discoveries into innovative cancer therapies.
