OCTA Farmacie Groep is a nationwide pharmaceutical organisation with over 900 employees. OCTA comprises pharmaceutical wholesalers, institutional pharmacies, Central Filling hubs and more than 50 community pharmacies across the Netherlands. See also (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). .

For a strategic development project, we are looking for an experienced Senior Python Developer who will be primarily responsible for one specific system or product. In this role, the candidate will combine strong technical execution with ownership of the product and direct liaison with business stakeholders.

The developer will work within a broader engineering structure comprising three development teams, a product owner and a tech lead.

• Senior level (extensive experience as a full-stack developer)
• Strong backend focus using Python, but also proficient in frontend development
• Experience with modern web architectures and API design
• Experience leading a dedicated domain or product
• Strong communication skills and a business-minded approach
• Experience with stakeholder management and internal client communication
• Excellent command of the Dutch language, both spoken and written, is required.

• Experience with AI / prompting (e.g. working with LLMs or AI integrations)
• Experience with the Java programming language
• Experience with the key-value stores Redis / Valkey

• Actively contributing to the development of the code
• Translating business requirements into scalable technical solutions
• Communicating proactively with internal clients and stakeholders
• Taking responsibility for the product backlog and prioritisation (in consultation with the business)
• Ensuring code quality, architecture and best practices

• Salary, depending on skills and experience, ranges from €5,500 to a maximum of €7,500
• 8% holiday pay
• A 12-month contract for 40 hours per week, with the prospect of a permanent position

• Ability to navigate existing codebases with ease and refactor them where necessary
• In-depth knowledge of SQL: ability to (re) design database tables, including foreign keys, constraints, indexes, joins and performance analysis, both theoretically and in practice.
• Good knowledge of networking: how IPv4 works, DNS servers, NTP servers, port forwarding and debugging skills: ping, trace route, dig, ARP tables, etc.
• Python: not only able to write code, but also to truly understand it: how the GIL works, how different implementations can impact performance (e.g. member checks between a list and a set). Able to resolve existing issues: for example, cases where an ORM query is slow.
• Infrastructure knowledge: you can set up CI/CD pipelines and have done so before. You know how SSH keys work and how Docker (and Docker Compose) works. You can also analyse and debug a production server when issues arise: CPU, RAM, disk space, write speed, etc.
• Up-to-date knowledge of the Python ecosystem, for example package managers such as ‘uv’ and tools such as ‘ruff’, ‘ty’ and ‘mypy’.
• Sufficient front-end knowledge to be able to assess code (written by Claude): what is good and what is not.
