Backend Team Lead

Your Impact

As a Backend Team Lead, you play a pivotal role in the success of our digital platform. You combine strong technical expertise with people leadership, guiding a team of Backend and Site Reliability Engineers (Levels A-C) while ensuring the delivery of scalable, reliable, and future-proof solutions.

You are responsible for driving technical excellence, fostering team growth, and aligning development efforts with the long-term vision and architecture of the de Bijenkorf e-commerce platform. Working closely with fellow Team Leads, Product Managers, Architects, and Engineers, you help shape the future of our technology landscape.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing hands-on technical leadership with coaching, mentoring, and strategic decision-making.

• Lead, together with the other teams the architecture, design, scalability, reliability, and performance of backend systems and applications, while ensuring high engineering standards through code reviews, best practices, and technical guidance.
• Lead, coach, and develop a team of Backend and SRE Engineers, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and a high-performing engineering culture.
• Drive technical problem solving, incident management, and complex investigations, providing expert direction on critical technical challenges and solutions.
• Align technical initiatives with business objectives by acting as a key link between engineering, product, design, operations, and other stakeholders.
• Coordinate team priorities, resource planning, and delivery execution, while maintaining transparent communication on progress, risks, and outcomes.
• Continuously improve processes, tools, and ways of working to enhance efficiency, quality, delivery speed, and innovation through the evaluation of emerging technologies.

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including leadership of engineering teams and complex, large-scale digital platforms.
• Strong technical background in Java/Spring Boot, cloud-native architectures, containerization, CI/CD, and event-driven systems.
• Experience working with technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, Azure, AWS, GCP, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Jenkins, and Cloudflare.
• Experience with Kotlin and frontend frame works like React, Angular or similar is preferred.
• Proven ability to lead teams, drive technical excellence, and align technology decisions with business objectives.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with a proactive mindset and passion for continuous improvement.
• Bachelor's degree (HBO/WO) or equivalent level, fluent in English, and based in the Netherlands.
