Job DetailsUnit-Based Education Coordinator plans and implements clinical education training and professional development at the unit level for the nursing, allied health, and patient care staff at Island Health. The incumbent’s primary emphasis is ensuring unit staff are clinically competent and able to meet the clinical practice needs of the community’s population, achieved through evidence-based practice aligned with Island Health’s mission, vision, and values.

- Conduct need assessments in assigned units and collaborate with unit leadership to identify education gaps and performance improvement needs, focusing on clinical topics directly relevant to patient care of the specific unit.
- Ensure that educational offerings are congruent with organizational mission, values, and goals and reflect the Island Health Promise.
- Support unit preceptors in the orientation and onboarding of new nursing and allied health hires.
- Support the new employee orientation program for all new hires to Island Health.
- Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) committees, task forces & other patient care related committees, and Performance Improvement (PI) opportunities utilizing evidence-based research and practice.
- Provide bedside just in time or point-of-care education to ensure staff can safely perform clinical skills and procedures.
- Develop and implement training curriculums and clinical competency guidelines to allow for progress to independent practice of new hire or transfer to specialty area staff.
- Contribute to the development of unit specific policies, specifically related to clinical practice.
- Support and participate in hospital wide clinical initiatives such as new equipment training, or product evaluation.
- Leverage technology to accelerate professional development and clinical practice at the bedside. Advance clinical education department activities using Learning Management Systems (LMS), Resuscitation Quality improvement (RQI) programs, and office productivity platforms.
- Foster interprofessional, positive and collegial relationships with managers, physicians and other hospital staff members.
- Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, regulatory compliance with accrediting and licensing bodies such as DNV and the State Department of Health, as well as hospital and patient care policies, procedures and standards.
- Incorporate principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.
- Demonstrate fiscal awareness by identifying cost saving initiatives and managing resources responsibly.
- Serve as an RN and Hospital employee role model to promote excellence and safety.
- Role model and promote the concept of lifelong learning by engaging in own professional development, and participating in learning opportunities.
- Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience required with previous experience in providing clinical education.
- BSN degree in nursing.
- Current BLS certification. ACLS or PALS certification depending on current practice area.
- Participation in NPD certification course prep within one (1) year.
- NPD board certification obtained within two (2) years of hire.
- Current Registered Nurse license issued by the WA Department of Health.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with department managers and staff from all departments.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to provide direction and development to employees by coaching and identifying training needs.
- Must be highly self‑motivated and self‑directed.
- Nursing certification in specialty area of practice.
- Master’s degree in nursing or another relevant field.
- NPD-BC certification.
