Job Description: Controls and extinguishes fires and engages in search and rescue for the preservation of life and property. Responds to all medical emergencies and administers life saving measures as defined by the State Department of Health and Regional Emergency Medical protocol for a certified paramedic in Advance Life Support (ALS), or EMT in Basic Life Support (BLS). Maintains apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, and grounds as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must have current EMT certification in Washington State. Must satisfactorily complete Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) course and maintain certification. Must be able to satisfactorily complete firefighter I and II training at an accredited firefighter training program and become certified by International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).
Licenses and other requirements: Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Fire protection work including the principles and practices of modern fire control and prevention.
Ability to:
- Maintain excellent communications skills, for example, to calm individuals experiencing a medical emergency, manage abusive behavior, create public trust, give and receive information on the radio under emergency situations, and provide informational presentations about the department.
- Read and interpret a variety of technical materials, including manuals and periodicals. Ability to write clear and concise reports using correct spelling and proper grammar. Ability to competently utilize various computer programs to enter data, keyboard and generate reports.
- Handle high level of personal stress, and to maintain composure and control of self and the situation, under a variety of adverse conditions, including verbal and physical abuse, witnessing death and critical injuries, and experiencing risk of personal harm. Must cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for all the rights of citizens.
- Perform duties and maintain personal conduct, attitude, and appearance that conform to strict policies, procedures, and discipline, within a hierarchal management system. Ability to work as a reliable team member and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and others outside the department, such as hospital staff and police.
LEVEL OF AUTHORITY: Performs assigned responsibilities in accordance with established Skagit County protocols. In emergency situations performs duties where quick and sound decisions must be made, and where incorrect decision or action could result in serious risk of physical harm to self and co-workers, harm to other individuals, costly damage to equipment, increased property loss, or detrimental public view of the department.
May be assigned to act as Upgrade Lieutenant.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in diverse environments depending on situational demands. Work involves safely operating emergency vehicles in all kinds of conditions. Work includes ability to work in dynamic environments with unpredictable hazards. The work environment may require strenuous work in an environment containing life threatening hazards that require the use of breathing apparatus.
