Laboratory Assistant – Part Time / Days

Island Health is looking for a dedicated Laboratory Assistant to perform both non‑technical and technical duties related to clinical laboratory testing. The role involves specimen collection, patient interaction, and assisting with routine lab processes.

  0.5 FTE / Part Time / Days
• Salary Range: $21.48 – $31.91 per hour

• Develop and facilitate good working relationships with supervisors, physicians, staff members and co‑workers.
• Contribute to problem‑solving activities intra‑ and inter‑departmentally.
• Use department resources (supplies, equipment) in a cost‑effective manner.
• Promote safe patient care and demonstrate responsibility for patient safety.
• Under supervision and with on‑the‑job training from a Medical Technologist, perform waived testing, urine measurements and culture setups as allowed by Washington State and CLIA licensing.
• Obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages.
• Perform drug screen collections and maintain DOT/NONDOT certifications.
• Ensure integrity of all samples through proper patient identification, labeling, appropriate tubes and techniques.
• Receive, sort and organize requisitions, enter lab orders into the computer, schedule tests and perform other lab clerical tasks.

• High School Diploma or GED
• Certified by the State of Washington as a Medical Assistant – Phlebotomist (MA‑P)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • Note:
    
    MA‑P and BLS must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
• Minimum six (6) months phlebotomy experience at Island Health or one (1) year documented experience as a Laboratory Assistant or equivalent as determined by Laboratory Director.
• Qualify under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
