Position Summary
The Emergency Room Technician, as a member of a multidisciplinary health team, assists in emergency patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, and focuses on patient comfort, hygiene, and safety. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of AHMC-Anaheim Regional Medical Center and AHMC. The employee is expected to demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values of AHMC-ARMC and AHMC, support AHMC-ARMC’s strategic plan and goals, and support all organizational expectations including Customer Service, Patient Rights, Confidentiality of Information, Environment of Care, and AHMC initiatives.
EssentialJob Functions
- Under the general supervision of RN, Physician or other care providers, the Emergency Room Technician performs assigned procedures according to established guidelines within the scope of training, including, but not limited to performing electrocardiogram (EKG), accurate vital sign measurement and documentation, application of monitor leads, blood pressure cuff and pulse oximeter, laboratory specimen collection and delivery, point‑of‑care testing, setting up and assisting with minor medical procedures, application of orthopedic splints, and patient transport and mobilization using safe patient‑handling techniques.
- Emergency Room Technician II performs additional duties such as glucose testing and phlebotomy after advanced training and certification.
- Communicates perceived changes in patient condition to RN, Physician or other care providers.
- Performs unit secretary duties as needed.
- Demonstrates the ability to safely and competently provide care in emergency situations and demonstrates competence in performing duties/responsibilities relating to patient care.
- Meets population/age‑specific competencies per unit‑specific addendum.
- Consistently applies infection control policies and practices, understands and practices standard precautions and appropriate disease‑specific isolation.
- Appropriately handles and disposes of sharps, ensures sterility of supplies and equipment, and safely uses equipment and supplies for patient care.
- Monitors supply stock level, restocks supplies as needed, and immediately reports any supply needs to supervisor.
- Demonstrates the ability to competently complete clerical activities for the unit.
- Attends department‑specific education, training, in‑services, staff meetings, mandatory educational activities, and verifies attendance by signature/initials.
- Submits all required CEUs and paperwork by deadline and participates in departmental performance improvement projects and monitoring.
- Knows and understands the PDSA model for the unit’s Performance Improvement Program, demonstrates understanding of performance improvement principles, and actively assists in performance improvement monitoring.
- Provides psycho‑social, spiritual, and cultural needs of the healthcare team and performs other duties as assigned.
- One year of acute care experience in an emergency services or related area.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Korean) preferred (as applicable).
- Phlebotomy training course & certification.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training course & certification preferred.
- Current Healthcare Provider BLS.
- Current EMT certificate preferred.
- California certification Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) I or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II.
- ACLS preferred.
- PALS preferred.
- Management of Assaultive Behavior (completion within the initial 3‑month period of employment).
- Meets AHMC customer service expectations.
- Promotes a service culture that exemplifies the Customer Service Standards set forth by ARMC.
- Keeps patient well‑being as a top priority.
- Identifies and addresses patient needs and concerns promptly.
- Communicates with patients and their families in a caring, respectful, and polite manner.
- Ensures that patients and their families understand and are satisfied with any conversations with staff.
