Pay Range: $90,000 - $117,000 per year, commensurate with skills and experience

Reports to:

Immigrants' Rights Senior Managing Attorney

About the Role

The Immigrants' Rights Managing Attorney reports directly to the Immigration Rights' Managing Attorney and is primarily responsible for a wide variety of duties. The main responsibility is to maintain a full caseload and help with grant obligations, and supervise/train staff as needed.

Responsibilities
  • Manage a full caseload that mostly consists of removal defense and asylum cases.
  • Oversee and delegate work of assigned staff and volunteers, providing training and guidance as needed.
  • Provide full-scope representation before DHS (USCIS, ICE, CBP), DOS, EOIR and appeals to federal courts.
  • Prepare immigration applications and petitions for submission to the appropriate agency.
  • Research and analyze legal sources to prepare memos, training material, advisories, motions, and appeals.
  • Train staff in immigration law, client representation, and preparation of various immigration applications and forms of relief.
  • Manage relationships with partners, donors, grantors, and elected officials as needed to further services to clients.
  • Assist the development department with grant writing and oversee preparation of grant deliverable reports to maintain sustainable funding for IRC services.
  • Support strategic external messaging on immigration policy and reform in collaboration with the communications and policy departments.
  • Help create and supervise outreach and educational strategies to increase the department's impact.
  • Assist with participation in campaigns, projects, and publications related to immigrants' rights.
  • Monitor and improve services to manage ongoing engagement and client expectations.
  • Assist with updating and maintaining the department manual to ensure office procedures and case management systems are followed and improved for efficiency and productivity.
  • Help supervise and monitor client referrals to third-party legal and social service providers.
  • Under direction of the senior managing attorney and deputy executive director, participate in and supervise the immigration department's engagement in coalitions advocating for immigrants' rights.
  • Other office duties as needed, including day-to-day operational tasks and helping with organizational fundraising events.
Qualifications
  • Law degree from an American Bar Association accredited school.
  • Licensed to practice law in any state, preferably California.
  • 5+ years of experience in immigration rights and legal services.
  • 3+ years of experience in removal defense is required.
  • 3+ years of experience in affirmative relief (e.g., asylum, TPS, family-based petitions, U-visa, SIJS, VAWA, T-visa, adjustment of status, naturalization).
  • 3+ years of experience supervising, mentoring, and/or training attorneys and staff.
  • Fluent/proficient in one of the following languages preferred:
    Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Pashto, or Urdu.
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations and the Muslim community is preferred.
  • Strong time management, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Access to reliable transportation to drive to various Southern California cities for client interviews and hearings.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and client confidentiality.
  • High degree of self-motivation and creativity.
  • Strong commitment to CAIR's mission.
  • Experience in case management software; basic computer proficiency including MS Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of applications such as SharePoint, Office
    365, One Drive, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, and social media applications is a plus.
