- The Anchorage Trial Court is accepting applications for a Chambers Judicial Assistant 1 (salary range 12). The successful applicant will provide administrative support for Superior Court Judge William Taylor, including scheduling, case file management, and various administrative and clerical duties.
The Judicial Assistant is responsible for ensuring the smooth and timely flow of paperwork and case files between the judges’ chambers and the clerk’s office. This position involves typing and revising correspondence, court orders, and legal documents as directed by the judge, as well as drafting simple orders for judicial signature on routine or administrative matters. The assistant manages files with pending motions, evaluates urgency and readiness for review, and maintains oversight of matters under advisement and the judge’s active caseload.
Additional duties include filing and distributing signed orders and court notices, maintaining and updating motion and case records in Court View, and coding and routing documents appropriately in OnBase. The Judicial Assistant is also responsible for scheduling and coordinating hearings, managing the judge’s calendar in both Court View and Microsoft Outlook, and evaluating hearing requests to ensure efficient scheduling and time management.
The role requires professional interaction with the public in the courtroom, as well as screening incoming calls and visitors to chambers with discretion and tact, determining the appropriate amount of information to disclose, and following up when necessary. The assistant prepares and submits pay affidavits for the judge, initiates and processes travel authorizations and reimbursements, and assists with other administrative tasks or special projects as assigned.
Additional responsibilities may include coordinating meetings, drafting internal communications, and performing other duties necessary to support the efficient operation of the court.
The Anchorage Superior Court bench consists of 17 superior court judges. Of these, Judge Taylor and 11 others, are assigned to handle civil, probate, child-in-need-of-aid and delinquency cases. Each judge’s chambers consist of a Chambers Judicial Assistant and a law clerk. Chambers staff work independently of other chambers, but may be called upon to assist another Chambers Judicial Assistant during times of vacancy or extended leave.
