  • A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education.
  • Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
  • a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
  • a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
  • passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
  • an endorsement in the content area of this position.
  • Educators teaching in Kindergarten through 3rd grade must meet requirements for the Alaska Reads Act.
  • Evidence of experience working with special education students.
  • Experience working collaboratively to support the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.
  • Ability to describe their philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to their practice.

  • Evaluation of pupils' academic and social growth, maintaining records, and preparing progress reports.

  • Creation and maintenance of an engaging and conducive learning environment.
  • Partnership with parents, families, and the community; regular communication via newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.

    Salary: B00/00 - B72/20 ($56,823-$100,155) DOE

    The successful candidate will receive an additional 6% increase on their annual salary.

    Job Summary
    Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, in various educational settings. They create a flexible program and environment, establish rapport with students, modify curricula with supports, and work collaboratively with parents and staff. The teacher reports to and is evaluated by the site principal.

    This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days depends on the AEA negotiated pay scale. The pay scale details are available online on the Labor Relations Department website. The grade level, content area, and work site may change based on enrollment and staffing needs. Positions from 0.50 to 1.0 FTE are covered by Alaska Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS);

    those from 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are covered by PERS; positions 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.
