OverviewThe Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region, is seeking an Engineer/Architect 1/2 Flex (Geotechnical Engineer) in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving. This position involves collaboration to develop Geotechnical Recommendations in support of bid-ready documents for highway and aviation-related transportation projects. The incumbent will supervise and work closely with three Engineering Assistants while reviewing plan sets, creating drill plans, and coordinating with other design staff.
The role is primarily office-based with occasional trips to project sites, sometimes in remote areas accessible by small aircraft.
Base Salary Information:
Engineer/Architect 1 – $3,776.00 / bi-weekly (OT Ineligible)
Engineer/Architect 2 – $4,032.80 / bi-weekly (OT Ineligible)
- Supervise and work with three Engineering Assistants; review plan sets and create drill plans; coordinate with other design staff.
- Develop Geotechnical Recommendations in support of bid-ready documents for highway and aviation projects.
- Contribute to the Central Region Materials Section team in Anchorage, including Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Assistants, Engineering Geologists, and Lab staff.
- Prepare site-specific geotechnical recommendations to advance projects; participate in office work with occasional field activities.
- Geotechnical Engineering knowledge: understanding of subsurface soil/geologic conditions for foundations, earth structures, or remediation.
- Managing Performance: ability to set, communicate, and track goals; provide resources and support; address performance issues.
- Writing: strong command of English grammar, punctuation, and clear technical communication.
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Occasional travel to project sites within southcentral Alaska (1–2 trips per summer month); may involve small aircraft travel with infrequent overnight stays and potential adverse weather.
- Engineer/Architect 1:
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect; or eligible for comity per AS 08.48.191(b) with Alaska registration within one year of hire. - Engineer/Architect 2: PE or Architect registration, and one year of professional experience as Engineer/Architect 1 or Engineering Associate with the State of Alaska, or equivalent; must be eligible for comity if not registered in Alaska.
- At time of application, submit required licensing and driver information; provide three professional references.
- Flexibly staffed: position may be filled at Engineer/Architect 1 or 2 level; starting salary determined by level; promotion upon successful probation and training.
