Join the Central Region Aviation Design Group and receive on‑the‑job training in aviation design. You will assist a Project Manager in developing federally funded improvement projects for state‑owned airports in central and western Alaska. Responsibilities include negotiating engineering consultant contracts, reviewing project designs for quality and compliance, coordinating technical issues, and managing project scopes, budgets, and schedules. You will also provide guidance on federal and state airport design standards.

The Central Region Aviation Design Group designs improvements for over 70 state‑owned airports, many serving isolated communities reliant on air travel for medical care, supplies, and transportation. As a Consultant Coordinator, you will support a Project Manager in planning, designing, and delivering projects that enhance these vital airports and improve the lives of Alaskans.

The Working Environment You Can ExpectPosition located at DOT PF Central Region Headquarters, 4111 Aviation Avenue, Anchorage, Alaska, near Lake Hood Seaplane Base and Ted Stevens International Airport. Standard work week: 37.5 hours with optional schedule flexibility and telework. Travel is occasional, rarely overnight, and may involve flying to remote communities.

- Valid Driver’s License preferred but not essential.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) required for the Engineer/Architect 1 level.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or land surveying from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- Two years of engineering, architectural, or land surveying experience, with at least one year at the working or intermediate trainee level (e.g., former Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska).
- OR
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a non‑ABET institution, plus an Engineer‑In‑Training (EIT) certificate or FE exam verification, and the same experience requirements.
Substitutions:
Four years of ABET‑accredited postsecondary education and/or engineering experience may substitute for the degree. Graduate study may substitute for experience.
- Eight years of progressively responsible work experience in engineering, land surveying, or architecture, with at least one year as an Engineering Assistant 3.
Substitutions: ABET‑accredited coursework may substitute for required experience.
Engineer/Architect 1- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.
Persons not registered in Alaska must be registered in a recognized state and become registered in Alaska within one year of hire.
