Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I – DOE – 6:30pm – 5:00am

Under the close supervision of a licensed pharmacist, performs technical duties related to pharmaceutical care in an accurate and timely manner.
SummaryProvides supportive, technical care in a pharmacy setting, ensuring the safe and accurate preparation, handling and dispensing of medication throughout the inpatient unit.
Responsibilities- Non‑Sterile and Sterile Compounding
- Prepares compounded non‑sterile and sterile preparations, including chemotherapy, IV additive solutions and controlled substances, for final pharmacist verification.
- Interprets physician orders, selects and measures medications for compounding, composes ingredients, inspects final product for accuracy, labels the product, maintains manufacturing records and obtains final pharmacist check.
- Determines accurate expiration or beyond‑use dates for each product prepared.
- Prescription Processing
- Accurately interprets, fills, and prepares prescriptions with appropriate medications and/or medical supplies for pharmacist verification.
- Inventory Management
- Receives, checks, rotates and stocks items from pharmacy procurement; reconciles discrepancies and ensures correct items are received.
- Inventories and replenishes operating room and surgical area trays, RSI kits, etc.
- Manages controlled substances, complies with regulatory requirements and assists with drug diversion surveillance.
- Operates and maintains automated dispensing unit‑dose systems and repackaging software.
- Packages medications into single unit doses and prepares patient‑specific doses as needed.
- Determines floor and external stock needs; follows established policies to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Restocks drug storage areas and refills automated drug dispensing devices throughout the hospital.
- Other Duties
- Performs additional duties as assigned or required.
- Knowledge of pharmaceutical equipment and instruments.
- Knowledge of regulations and practice standards of pharmaceutical care.
- Knowledge of drug names, strengths and dosage forms.
- Knowledge of applicable computer software systems.
- Skill in using pharmaceutical equipment and instruments.
- Critical thinking skills in performing pharmaceutical care activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Minimum Experience QualificationNon‑supervisory – None.
Minimum Certification QualificationCurrent State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Intern license required.
Preferred Experience QualificationPharmacy or related experience preferred.
Additional Requirements- When exposed to hazardous materials, sharp objects or infectious diseases, must don appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must operate within department’s engineering controls such as negative‑pressure storage rooms and compounding hoods.
