Summary

Under close supervision, provides clerical and technical support to laboratory staff through reception, basic specimen processing, and laboratory organization. Also, provides phlebotomy services as required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide phlebotomy services, including venipuncture.
  • Provide clerical and technical support to the laboratory of the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC).
  • Answer incoming phone calls and route callers to appropriate department or personnel.
  • Provide customer services to physicians, nurses, and others contacting the laboratory; answer questions about laboratory processes, available services, and basic technical issues.
  • Assist in specimen processing: evaluate specimens for integrity, verify correct labeling and paperwork, resolve discrepancies with specimen documentation as they arise, assist with processing incoming specimens, distribute specimens to assigned areas.
  • Assist with microbiology set‑ups of patient specimens and QC organisms, and rapid testing set‑ups.
  • Assist with daily/weekly/monthly maintenance procedures of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in laboratory organization, records maintenance, reception, scheduling, and general duties to facilitate office administration; assist with department projects.
  • Maintain department records and assure completeness of files; update, distribute, and archive productivity reports.
  • Send, receive and distribute lab results; make copies and scans and file electronic documents; maintain, order, and stock office and technical supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of various techniques in collecting specimens.
  • Knowledge of customer service concepts and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic clinical processes and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of privacy laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of multi‑line telephone systems operation.
  • Skill in determining most appropriate site to obtain specimens.
  • Skill in operating office and basic laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.
Minimum Education Qualification

A high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Minimum Experience Qualification

Non‑supervisory – One (1) year of laboratory specimen and collection techniques experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.

Minimum Certification Qualification

Phlebotomist (ASCP) OR Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) OR equivalent certification (as determined by a national credential certification agency).
